  • Mackie or JBL ?

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on a pair of Mackie SRM 450 (powered) vs. JBL EON 15G2 (powered) for my V-session. Both seem great. All opinions are appreciated. I am hoping to purchase one of these set's this weekend.

Personally, I'm giving the new Samson dB500as a serious look. It has a 15" woofer (compared to the Mackie's 12"), and more power than the JBL. It's cheaper, too, by about $200.00 a pop. I know some people equate Samson with "low quality", but I really don't care about that too much. I'm hoping that the dB500as will be awesome powered speakers and make me look like a genius for purchasing them!

Specs don't always tell the story, but I think these look pretty good. I'll let you all know how it goes when I get them........

You are correct, sir! An apostrophe between the "a" and the "s" would have been incorrect, as that would have indicated a singular possessive. That concludes our English lesson for today! Class dismissed!

There are numerous threads on this issue already. Might want to do a search. IIRC, the Mackies are favored over the JBL but just slightly and either are a good buy. Regardless, I doubt you would be disappointed in either.
              TD6, 5 PD6, 2 CY-6, PD100, Pintech Concertcast Kick, and a home-brew A to E cymbal conversion (using CY-6 piezo & jack).

                  $200???

So this Samson dB500a is probably overpriced?

Still looks like a good speaker (spec wise)!

I tried out a pair of mackies last night and was very impressed, but as c.jude mentioned, i didnt find the low end oomph that i desire. Incredible highs and punch though. Now i understand that i could always add a powered sub to compliment the mackies but things start to add up pretty quick dont they!!! Im going to pick up the JBL's on my way home and try both pairs for a side by side comparison. I do have a concern with the JBL's however. I did a search on both mackie and JBL (this site is just too awsome for info) and found a thread started by "clymore" (June 17, 2002) who asked the question..."JBL or Mackie?". The second to last thread by "TheInsider" stated that "if you push the JBL past 75% with the bass above flat you get some distortion" AND also stated that "he did a flat EQ test side by side and the JBL had a really honky midrange and the horn was more directional". I was hoping i could get a few comments on the above. Thanx.

I've been following the Mackie vs. JBL debate for some time and the summary given by c.jude seems fair based strictly on years of threads on this forum. Per what I've read, Mackies have better high-end articulation -- good if you don't want your cymbals to sound shrill -- and JBLs better lows, which would help avoid weak floor toms and kicks.

It makes me wonder, if you are getting pairs, why not buy one of each? JBL compensates for Mackie's lack of bass, Mackie compensates for JBL's inferior high-frequency fidelity.

                      Opinions?

I have two EON 15's and the EONSUB. Most of the time I only use one of the EON's but I have used them all three on drums, or for the sound system on small gigs. Since they are powered, they can be used individually as amps/monitors. I keep one in my home music room with a 4-channel mixer for my practice drum set and a couple of guitars.

This set of three EON's makes a pretty good DJ system with a two channel DJ mixer I have and a couple of portable DC players.
