  • Question related to TD-8 "mix-in"

We are considering the following monitor set-up for our v-drums in our church worship band and I'm not sure if this is ok. We want to be able to monitor via headphones to eliminate the need for an open stage monitor if possible.

We are planning to use a Rolls PM52

Hi, Brandon. Hate to rain on your parade, but there's one fairly substantial problem that's going to ruin this particular plan of attack of yours------anything that goes through the TD-8's Mix In also comes out of its Master Outs. You'd be creating an audio "loop" that I can tell you from prior experience has most undesirable sound qualities.

You'd be much better off simply having everyone monitor directly from a multi-channel headphone amp like a Behringer Powerplay.......

Thanks for the info - though I had already figured this out from previous posts using the search function here.

Actually, we plan to output from the direct outs. I realize this bypasses the TD-8 on board effects and eq, but we have already tried both outputs and honestly did not notice much of a difference with or without the ambience and eq. Our sanctuary is circa 1920's with about 80' vaulted ceilings and plaster walls, so we have all the ambience we need anyway (which is actually one of the main reasons we recently switched to v-drums).

As far as using a small headphone mixer for everyone to monitor from, that would be ideal, but I would think that could be problematic because everyone would be stuck with the same monitor mix. Plus, headphone monitoring is really dry sounding from what I have been told and while I am willing to live with that, I'm not sure that everyone else would be. Unless there is a cheap easy way to add some effects/ambience to the mix. Any suggestions there?

          Thanks for the reply!

I don't know if this is going to solve your problem, but I wanted to point out that each of the Powerplay's four front-panel headphone channels also have auxiliary inputs. This enables you to run your own instrument's signal against the rest of the mix and control it accordingly by way of a "ratio" knob. This would give each band member some flexibility in terms of a personalized mix. My suggestion would be to run into the auxiliary jack from the insert jack on your mixer on a per-channel basis.

As a side note, the Powerplay also has a Mix In jack for feeding in an outside audio source............

            Hope this helps!

So everyone can run their instrument directly into the Powerplay mixer then on to the snake, is that right?

What is the "insert jack"? On a "per channel basis"?

Outside audio source such as? Would this be where the monitor mix comes in? At line level? You'll have to pardon my ignorance!

We have no aux sends on our mixer and we currently have only one monitor send. The main reason we need the PM52 is that we only have speaker level signals on the stage coming from the main mixer in the back of the sanctuary.

              Thanks again.
