  • Simple Recording Needs

Hello. Thank you for this great forum!!

My goal is to simply record my v-drums with the music coming from the mix in on to either a tape, cd, or even better....on to the PC for email use.

Right now, I receive mp3's from a friend out of town. I transfer them to wav files then burn them on to a disc.

I rehearse to that cd and write my parts. I just want to combine his work and mine and then send it back to him. Quality and editing are not a concern.

This is simple stuff, I'm sure.

    1) Is recording to a tape/cd player as easy as a cable connection?
    2) Can PC recording be done at a reasonable price? This way would be quicker and more productive.

This rookie would love any and all input. V-Drum Baby Steps!

    Why not:
    • * record your friend's mp3s onto disc
      * play them into your module's 'external source' input
      * play the drums as you already do
      * have the output from the module go to your computer soundcard's input
      * record a wav from your soundcard's input

    ...and you'd be done.

Note: you already do the first three items in the list, so all you need now is the cable to connect your module to your 'puter ($10 tops) and some freeware utility to record the wav. You could even get more freeware tools to convert the wav to mp3 and drop the results onto a disc.

The primary drawback in this is that you cannot do any post-production re-mixing... but I gather from your question that this is not needed anyway.

    wav to mp3 converter freeware...

This utility looks pretty good for recording from the sound card into either a .wav or a .mp3. I may have to give this one a go myself.

        Thank you!

I will try this simple connection and make it work for me!
I'm in no need of post production, just a simple recording showing my friend what I did on top of his musical idea.

          Ranman,
This looks like a cool bit of software! I sometimes tape our shows direct-to-tape with a stereo mic. I was looking for an easy way to drop some of the tunes directly to mp3 and this looks a lot easier (and easier on disk space) than make a wav file first, then making an mp3. Thanks for the link!

            Cool!

I haven't downloaded it yet, but I think it'll be really cool if it has the ability to say "start recording in 30 seconds" (to give me time to run over to the kit and get ready). If not, I'm sure you can 'trim the fat' off the leading & trailing edges of the data.

A punch-in/out foot switch would be even better... but, hey, its freeware!
