  • Roland/Gibraltar Hybrid

I'm looking into replacing my Roland rack arms with Gibraltar tubing. I think an all chrome rack would look a lot better with my white vSession than the blue MDS-10 rack. I have an online source that can ship me Gibraltar tubing very reasonably. My biggest concern is the compatibility with my Roland clamps and elbows joints. I use some Gibraltar hardware on my Roland rack, but I'm not sure if the reverse will work out. Am I the first to explore this conversion project? Any hints would be appreciated.

I just recently bought the gibraltar grs-350 from guitar center....all of the roland hardware fits nicely.

And being a rider of Harleys the chrome looks great.

I use a Gibratar rack my only suggestion would be to fill the rack tubes with foam peanuts. The material thickness, I think, is thinner then Rolands. The peanuts will help eliminate some cross talk issues that may occur with the Gibraltar tubes. Remember the Gibraltar rack was design for acoustic drums not electric. I stuffed mine full of the peanuts and have NO cross talk issues at all.

Thanks, good ideas. I'm going to start today! Is there a source for exact tube lengths on the MDS-10 rack? .... I don't have access to my rack until Friday. I'll update the progress and post pictures. Does anyone else have pictures they can post of their conversion?

I used the packing peanuts on my Gibraltar rack too, and it does help but it hasn't completely eliminated crosstalk. Sand may actually be the best solution. Another thing to do is replace the stock plastic end-caps with rubber stoppers, which helps a good deal to reduce the vibrations in the tubing (you can see for yourself by striking the rack tubing with a stick before and after the mod).

Where did you find rubber stoppers?

Home Depot. I think they were the 1-inch ones but I'm not sure. You may have to experiment. I found some nice black ones, about 4 for $2 I think, and they look better than the stock plastic ones too.

Rubber does have a tendency to help produce static electricity though.

How about foam pipe insulation? I think it comes in diameters that would fit inside rack tubing.

What about pipe insulation? Combine different diameters into one solid core? Cheaper, lighter, and easy to work with and find.

Solid rubber rod (for sliding inside rack tubes) - taint cheap, but there you go....

I wonder how large rubber "doughnuts" placed in various locations (i.e. between clamps, on legs, a few etc...)...
                          Hmmmm....

I wonder what would happen if you stretched a few of those on the tubes?? $6.00 for 50 of them isnt bad...
