  • TD10 & Midi backing tracks

Is anyone using their TD10 to play midi backing tracks in their band? I am toying with the idea of using some midi keyboard tracks with a click track to play along to in a band. This means one less member to the band, but it could sound like three keyboard players.

More money for the rest of the band or maybe the drummer should get the keyboard players share for having the idea and the equipment.

    Angus,
I have tried messing around with this a little bit. Some of the problems I have encountered with trying to substitute a whole part like the Bass or a keyboard is keeping everything together in time; especially with the Bass because it is not a real loud part. Also, I have not been able to figure out a way to trigger a separate, free standing sequencer, from the TD-10 to start the sequence. That would be nice so that the click in the TD-10 would keep you in time with the sequence. I read an article on this in "On Stage' magazine about six months ago and it did not even recommend using midi for backing tracks, saying it was too unstable . They recommended using MP3s instead. I have never tried this though myself; personal thing I guess; it seems ok to playback a midi file that you created but seems a little different when you play back a part on a CD .
Anyway, good luck and keep us posted on your results.

What if you created your own MP3 from your own midi part? Just a thought.

I use midi sequences with my band all of the time. Keyboard, bass percussion parts, they all work great. You must have good time, a good monitor and the other players must be able to keep time themselves. I always like to play with a sequencer, it adds more to the mix! Give it a try during rehersals, and have fun!

You need a click thats loud enough to hear clearly over the band, even with headphones on. I haven't done this since the old Macintosh days, it worked and things have come a long way since then although using a computer was unstable at the time. It should be fine with Cakewalk now.

            Zendrum,
do you start your backing tracks or does someone else in the band start them? I would be interested in how you have your midi setup to play the baking tracks. Are you using your TD-8/10 sequencer, the keyboard player's sequencer or a stand alone.
