  • how do i get this sound ?

    Hello

i am sure u all know the song ''Child in time" from deep purple. This song has lovely edge sounds on the cymbals in the beginning. How do i get this sound using a td-12 module and either cy-8 or cy-12 (does it make any difference ?)

    thanks
    Ex E-kits:
''Lernean Hydra'' ( a bounche of roland pads with a td-6 module)
''Lucy'' (Diamond electronic drums with a td-12 module)
    current E-kit
    ''Cherry Gretschy Lady'' (Gretsch Catalina Ash 6 piece A to E kit-Roland td20 module-A to E cymbals)

    A-kit
    " Mrs.Catalina'' (Gretsch Catalina maple 6 piece kit-Paiste signature+Masterwork custom made cymbals)

Those are taps and rolls on the bell of the cymbal with the tip of the stick.
Easy to do on an acoustic....no idea how to create that with e-cymbals. Maybe map some bell sounds to the bow of one or more cymbals?
Have you done the bell-fix that some others have done here? Not sure if it would make a difference or not. Maybe someone that has done it will chime in....

For reference, studio version is here:

BTW, thanks for reminding me of this one....time to go dust off my old copy of "Made In Japan"......

I think this is a very BASIC feature every ecymbal should have.I don't wanna believe roland has not workrd on this.Actually it,s a soft bow tic not an edge as i said neither a bell . I use it very often on accoustic for ballads mainly.
Colg....btw made in japan is Imo the best live album ever !!

It's definitely played on the bell. From the first YouTube clip Colquhoun posted, it sounds like it's played a little more on the bow for the last hit in each group, but it might just be because it's a different cymbal. But yeah, it's definitely bell.

            E-cymbals don't use the bells?!

They do, but you need to whack the snot out of them.
Thus, you get a bell "whack" sound, and not the "nuanced-Ian-Paice-stick-tip-bell-dance" that makes the song.
The bell fix modification should make this possible, as it greatly increases the sensitivity of the bell on CY-12, 14 and 15 cymbals. Modify at your own risk, but there have been MANY happy modifiers here on this forum.

yes it's obvious it's bell u are right colq....swear i saw it somewhere with the edge...anyway that;s not the point.

so even if u get close to this sound u can do it only with a td-12 module and only on a cy-12 right ?
well this is one of the things i don't like on roland products. It's so common on an accoustic set, why do u need to get the hell out of you (did i say it right ?)
                to get this

You can only get a bell sound by hitting a bell on a CY-12, 14 or 15....
UNLESS you map one of the bell sounds to the bow of a CY-5 or CY-8. And you don't need a TD-12 for bell sounds. Just map any of the rdb sounds (instrument #631, #641, #645 etc. on a TD-6) to the bow of the CY-8...keep the edge as a crash, save the kit as "Paice" and off you go.

Would putting various bell sounds on the drum rims work??
I would think that would be an easy way to do it off hand.
