  • TD-3kw, TD-6kw or other?

    Hi,

I am about to buy a v drum, and my main goal is both practicing and playing in church with the same kit. I am thinking of buying a used TD-6kw (600 euro) or a new TD-3kw.

Which option would you go for? Which kit is best for my goals? Is the quality ok or should I really go for a (used) TD-9?

    With kind regards,

    Haegendoorn

I started with the 6 and traded up to a 9. the 9 of course is much better, but more expensive...the main problems with the 6 are that the dynamics are very bad- almost impossible to play ghost notes on snare...the hihat splash sound is very low, there isnt real hihat control besides open and shut...and the sounds are only so so by Roland's standard...the 3, though a more budget module, is actually newer and has better, albeit fewer sounds - and Vexpacks have tweaked the 6 up to acceptable levels...the 9 has far superior sounds...

as in all these questions, it is really best to go down to a shop and listen to the sounds yourself, to see what works for you, and if you can work with the cheapest sound...alternately, check out the vexpressions website http://www.vexpressionsltd.com/ and check out their sound example, of what the modules sounds like with vexpacks installed...

in the end, everyone's ears are different, and so it is a judgement call...,

Considering that they just came out, good luck finding a used one for a while!

I think most TD-6 owners would disagree with these statements. I don't remember complaints about dynamics or quiet hi-hat on a TD-6, and it certainly has more hi-hat sounds than just open and closed.

I am surprised you say so, Bruce, to me, these were the main selling points of the td-9, correcting these 'faults'...please chime in other present or ex-owners of the td-6 - HAMPIS, these means you!

In any case, I had struggled producing ghost notes on the 6, now can do them on the 9, couldnt get a decent splash sound (ie the pedal closing sound, not a stick sound), which i can now on the 9....and the 6 does only have open and closed sound, and according to page 38 of the manual, there is only open, closed, foot closed and foot open, none of the inbetween modes that the 9 can do ....

              TD6 HiHat Settings?

With the FD-6 pedal on a PD6 pad, there is a definite, gradual variation in sound between fully closed and fully opened. The changes in sound simulate a real hi-hat, becoming more and more open as you release the pedal. I think it's more sensitive, and has less range, than an analog hi-hat, but it does perform the same in terms of the sound.

Thanks to the FD-8 Hi-Hat Controller, drummers can get more realistic hi-hat sounds with smooth transitions between open and closed. TD-6SX: V-Tour Series
