  • Need new ride suggestions

    Hiya,

I currently have a Field Electronics ride, but I'm not entirely happy with it. It's possible that I just don't have it set up right, but I've been playing with it for a couple of months now.

When I had it plugged into a Tom1 jack on my TD-6V I got bow and bell sounds out of it, but it didn't trigger very consitantly on the bow. I switched to a TD-20 a few months ago and I got edge and bow and not a peep out of the bell trigger. I emailed Mr Field and haven't heard anything back (not picking on him, he was really helpful when I bought my stuff before, he probably hasn't had time to respond yet), so I'm thinking I'd just use the dang thing as a crash and get a ride that I can get to do what I want.

What I'm after is a ride where the bell and bow work really well, no mistriggering between the two different triggers (I know cross talk settings help with that). I wouldn't mind a 3 way trigger, but the bow/bell thing is the most important to me. I don't care what it looks like, but I'd like it to be quieter than bare metal or plastic. I can handle the noise hitting metal makes on a crash, but on a ride or hihat where you're hitting it repeatedly it gets annoying.

    Suggestions?

    thanks!

Ok, I used the search engine even more than I had before I before I posted the question...

So it looks like Yamaha 2 zones work fine as a crash, how do they perform as a ride on a roland module? I think using a yamaha 3 zone isn't worth my time because you have to mod it and I don't have enough time.

Other than that, it seems to be a Roland CY-15 is a good choice, as is a Hart ride. I'm guessing no one has too much good to say about smart triggers or the new Alesis surge rides? Anyone swear by a DIY ride?

    Suggestions?

I'm going to guess the Yamaha ride is a standard piezo-switch type, so it should work fine with a Roland module.

I agree that the CY15 would be a good choice. Cross-triggering just doesn't happen with this design.

Hart, because it is dual trigger, not just dual zone. I'm waiting for mine (still) but that's the reason I went for it, plus it looks ace!

Not without several modifications, as it uses a single jack for all three zones: Yamaha PCY150S Ride Cymbal Roland Conversion

That mod is why I don't want to try the Yamaha 3 zone, I've heard nice things about their 2 zones as a crash though.

What do you mean by dual trigger vs dual zone? Do you mean pizeo/pizeo vs pizeo/switch?

I think I'm leaning towards a Hart ride or a Cy-15, but I wish I could try them out first... Anyone used both before and have reasons why one's better than the other?

Dual zone is one trigger for the whole cymbal, with some clever trickery in the module, dual trigger is just that, separate piezos' for bell and bow. More accurate triggering.

I ordered the Hart II ride cymbal. I don't think I use the edge sound much anyway... Just for the record, you didn't talk me into it because you're a Dream Theater fan too...

Nice. I bet you get it before I get mine too, I've been waiting eons, it'll come with added cobwebs at this rate!

I hope so, I ordered it from RMC audio and it said 2-3 days.

I finally converted some A cymbals with kits from JMan, I'd been avoiding it because it looked like it'd take hours to do, but it took about 20 minutes each, super easy, worked great the second I plugged it in. Of course with those two cymbals added, and with the Hart ride coming in a few days, I'm out of cymbal mounts... Darn. Guess I'll have to get one more mount.

Damn, I need to move to the US! I have one supplier and Hart are messing him about, not his fault - 3 months now!

Man, that sucks. I wonder if it's faster getting Roland stuff in Japan?

Congrats on that Hart ECII ride. A very good choice indeed. After you get it going, I'm sure you'll see why so many of us Hart players rave about that ride.
