  • Help with CY-15R please

    I have a td20 with a CY-15R 3 zone ride cymbal.

My Bell is playing the Bow half the time. The harder I hit the more Bell I get but how can I make it always play Bell when I hit the Bell?

Also, how to adjust the sensitivities of each please?
    Edge
    Bow
    Bell

Also, what does "RD CTRL" mean? It's on R11 for the edge but not really explained.

Thanks, here's what I'm doing so far.

    Select MIXER

Hit your Ride BOW (middle of cymbal) or BELL to select the RIDE
Press F5 (H&R) to separate Bow/Bell or leave alone to adjust the volume together,
    Bow volume +/- to adjust
Bell volume Press RIM button by Lock and then +/- to adjust

Hit your EDGE to select the edge of the RIDE
    +/- to adjust

LOCK may help while playing and setting each zone.

PS: I have 3 way trigger set to ON.

Your steps for the mixer should get you independent volumes for bow, bell and edge.

You can adjust sensitivity of bell/edge separately at TRIGGER, ADVANCE, RIM, Rim Gain.

The RD CTRL just indicates that 3Way Trigger is ON, so input 11 will use settings from input 10.

By the way, didn't we resolve this seven months ago:

Thanks Bart, I have tried all values of RIM Gain (which changes for both H10 or R10 regardless which one I'm on) but my Bell is still only sounding half the time unless I pound it. Is my cymbal hosed ?

I changed the 3 zones to VERY different sounds so I can easily tell which is triggering and the Bell is only getting played on half the hits. The other half it sounds the Bow sound. Thanks for any more ideas.

I didn't realize the Bell was hosing me !

The display might ignore a change from R10 to H10, but the Rim Gain setting is only going to apply to R10.

You could play with the Scan Time setting, but I think the cymbal probably needs an internal cleaning and/or bell shim mod.

Bruce, can you point me to any docs on cleaning or shimming this cymbal please ?

              thanks a lot

I think this is exactly my problem:

striking the bell at low velocity was cross-triggering to the bow portion of the cymbal, and not until you were rapping the bell pretty smartly did the bell trigger come into play. Basically, there was a lot of one-way cross-talk owing to the fact that the rubber cover was transferring a lot of vibration to the bow sensor, even if I was only striking the bell.

I printed out the template from here but it's way too big. It fills a whole sheet of paper and the sensor is only about 5 inches across. Is there another template ?

                    CY-15 is dead

CY-15R Owners!! Have you done the bell fix?

Change Page Scaling in the Print dialog box to None instead of Fit to Printable Area.

I'm using Foxit reader and don't see that option. Anyways I made a template, cut me some plastic and it's a bit better. I'm going to try two layers now to see if that fixes it.

thanks, Roland should have a recall for this.

I added the 2nd shim and it works even better. My quiet bell is not working but medium to loud is now. maybe a 3rd shim or some thicker plastic. I'm using a thin cover to a notebook.

Ok, so what is RIM GAIN doing for a CY-15R? Does it affect Edge, Bow and Bell?

How many parameters are adjustable on the CY-15R? Many seem disabled.

This is my current understanding of some of the parameters:
Scan - For Kick double triggering especially
                          ----------------------------------------------------
                          Trigger / Advanced
Scan time sets how far into the trigger wave to use as the trigger point. 0 - 4.0 ms
while adjusting from 0, hit the drum at the same volume until it sounds consistent
Retrig Cancel acts as a threshold, increase to stop double triggers 1 to 16 (use mask time first)
If two or more sounds are being produced when you strike the head just once, then adjust Retrig Cancel.
Mask Time ignores additional triggers until after 0 - 64 ms

                          Rim
                          ----------------------------------------------------
                          Rim Gain rim/edge dynamics response/sensitivity
Sets sensitivity of hardness of rim hit (adjust volume in Rim mixer first)
RimShot Adjust Rim shots response 0 - 8.0, Sensitivity to false rim trigger from pounding a drum head,
                          lower values reduce false triggering
XStick Thrshld sets threshold where cross stick turns into a rim shot sound.
high settings give cross stick sound until the hardest hits

Rim Gain won't affect the bow. RimShot Adjust only applies to mesh pads on dual piezo inputs.

thanks a lot BarT. The Bell is back ! I see that Rim Gain on R10 is affecting the volume of both the Edge and the Bell. So what's the difference between that and the fader volume levels for H10, R10 and E11 ?

Thanks again for all the help. This drum kit is fantastic when it works and junk when it doesn't. Luckily it seems to be a pretty solid kit.
