  • Have Yamaha need to upgrade

Hello. I recently purchased a used yamaha Dtexplorer drum kit. It also came with a roland drum amp as well a dw throne and headphones. Not bad for 500 bucks.

So anyways now that I have gotten better the one thing I really dislike is only having a crash and a ride symbol. I also hate how these are only single zones. The other area I dislike is the hard rubber feel of the pads. I know roland makes some really nice stuff but that is pro stuff $$$$

So my question is I was looking at the new Alesis DM5 PRO kit with the surge symbols. Does anybody have any experience with this kit? Is is worth upgrading to that kit. OR what other kits do you guys suggest. Thanks for the input.

If you have a DTXpress (dunno which version) a DM5 pro is not an improvement. Alesis has slept for a while - the DM5 has some nice sounds but an even worse hihat. I suggest to look for a used TD-8 or TD-10

Thanks for your post puberty opinion. I kinda figured the next step up is a really big jump. Looks like you have the crappy beginner kit's then all the middle kits are the same then right after that you start to really hit the nice features.

Im sure the yahoo who is slamming yamaha had his mom and dad buy him a nice kit.

You might be happy with some of the new 2 and 3-zone Yamaha cymbals.
Do a search--Grog and others have high recs for some of these.

"The other area I dislike is the hard rubber feel of the pads."

The Simmons kit still has rubber pads. Your DTXplorer module is the basic Yamaha model with a three-zone snare input and two-zone inputs for the ride and crash cymbals. You could probably find some Pintech mesh drums and Yamaha 130s series (two-zone) cymbals for your ride and crash inputs on eBay. Lots of drummers piece their kits together from used equipment. Most of what you see in my attached photo was created from used Yamaha/Pintech gear. Good luck with the upgrade. WW

Holy shiz. Your setup is amazing. See that's what I was not sure about, is how compatible the yamaha set was. Thanks for the honest help I appreciate it.

So if I understnad you correctly my brain is capable of a 2 zone crash and ride, I simply need to get a cymbal pad that is a 2 zone pad correct? Can any brand work?

Thanks bignazzle. Yamaha cymbals/modules with Pintech drums.

Here's the manual from DTXperience.com. Most two-zone cymbals should work, but I'd stick with Yamaha since you have a DTXplorer.

                          Correct, except....
I do believe a Roland CY-5, 6, or 8 will flip the zones when plugged into a Yamaha module, meaning, the edge works as the bow and vice versa. I've used Pintech cymbals with both a DTXpress III and TD-6 module. The Pintech PC series ride has a bell and bow. It worked normal with the Yamaha Module, but on the Roland module, the bow was bell and bell was bow, so you'd have to reassign the triggers to accomodate... if that makes sense.

Think I just confused myself here... no wait, clear as mud.

24 that sounds right. So where do you want me to send you your cookie?

What is your point of being involved in this thread? Huh? This is the suggestions forum. Where is yours? That's right you only offered some pointless reply then bashed me for using a yamaha drum set. Go find some other kiddie forum to act like a troll.
