  • Looking for a Personal Monitor to jam with

i am looking to get a personal monitor so I can play with others. I had a bass amp hand me down that was not very good. Lots of distortion. I was hoping that if I hook up with someone I could just run a line from my module through their amp, but i think it might not work. Any suggestions on a good PM but not too much in cost. I was checking out the Roland PM's, but I wasnt sure how big of one I would need. Are their any other brands that are good to use as well?

    Thanks

i use a roland kc 500 keyboard amp which is basically a portable pa and it rocks. they dont make the kc 500 anymore as it was replaced with the kc 550.just make sure you get an amp that provides full range of frequencies and has plenty of power.

How much power would be enough? And will the description say full range frequencies? or does it give a range that I should be looking for? thanks

a typical self powered pa speaker or keyboard amp is full range meaning that it can handle the full range of frequencies bass mids highs that drums put out.
a bass amp is made for lows to low mids and a guitar amp is made for mids and high and both would be poor choise to amplify drums. as far as power. my kc 500 puts out 180 watts i think and it does the job just fine as a personal monitor which i use at chruch for worship.it can be pretty loud! also would be great for jamming with others and is plenty loud with plenty of thump. but for giging or worship service would not rely on just the amp overall but just as a personal monitor.

I use my bass amp and my drums sound great through it, but it is a high end 700W monster with a 410 cabinet and lots of equalization capability. A low end bass amp is not a good choice though. As has been said many times, PAs or keyboard amps are typically best for edrums.

            personal monitor

If I hadn't elected to build my own personal monitor cabinet, I would have bought one of these. By now I could have had two....oh well. Tapco, www.tapcoworld.com, a subsidary of Mackie, makes the Thump. The Thump is a powered amp that seems perfect for a drum monitor and small venues. The freq range is wide and the cost is $350 for 400 watts- check out specs see if still the same. This amp has been getting some mention in this forum.

Simmons makes a pretty good Drum amp. I've got the DA50 and it is fine for monitoring myself at home. It was $199 at guitarcenter. I'll be picking up their larger DA200 soon. I think the list on it is $300. You can test them out at guitarcenter. Many users on here report that they really like the DA200.
