  • td20 hi hat

hi, anyone got tips on controlling the td20 hi hat? I'm trying to bang it partly open and keep it there to get a lightly open splashy sound but I keep finding the sound jumps between a closed and "too" open sound. Anyone got tips to make this hi hat easy to work?

    Thanks !

there's a fixed hihat function if you look closely. you can set your hihat to be opened to a certain height.

Use the calibartion features and dial it in to where it behaves the way you want.

I also find that some h-hat sounds lend themselves to that in-between sound more than others.

A good, stiff spring is important, too.

yeah i dont' want fixed, i want the hi hat to work like it's supposed to. I have run the calibration with it closed doing kit/trigger. Is there some other calibration ?

Maybe I need a stiffer spring ? hmm

Hand tweak the calibration now. Put your foot where you want it and change the settings till it sounds like what you want.

Michael, Normally I calibrate like the manual says with the top hat released and resting on the bottom hat, then pressing, i think it's Trigger and Kit. Can you elaborate on hand tweaking ? Do you mean run the calibrate with the top hat secured? normally my top hat rests 3/4 inch apart from the bottom hat. Thanks for any tips. My goal is to have the full range of the hihat but be able to just almost close it and have a splashy sound that stays that way.

I'm having a bad time with my vh -12 hi-hat too as of lately. I've calibrated it every which way but upside down and I still can't get it to play nice. My problem is almost like yours but with mine, when i play closed hats, every once in a while i get a partially open hat sound, like when u release a little pressure from the pedal. Only problem is I'm not releasing any pressure, it just wanders by itself, and I find it making me want to play my kit less and less each day I dont know what to do to fix it other than replace it and at $450 it's not an easy pill to swallow.

George, I would check my hi hat pedal cable if I were you. Give it a bit of a twist and see what happens. SITM, I think Mike is referring to manually tweaking the hi hat offset value after you do the calibration. Is that correct Mr Render?

Sometimes the cable inside gets loose and it gets wacky too.

yeah i wanted to play last night and I just looked at the kit like this is not going to be fun have to keep messing with it when you just want to play. so i played with the dogs instead.

Yesp - exactly. The automatic calibration is just a start for me. I have to manually tweak the offset to get it where I want it.

What are you doing when you manually tweak? Are you playing the hi hat through the full range and then adjusting the offset value on the td20 ?
                            Thanks for any help.

No great secret. I find the automatic adjustment doesn't set the offset correctly for me. I move the cursor to the offset and plop my foot down hard. I then dial the offset until I get the nice "chink" sound I like. I then relieve tension on the pedal to the point where i want to hear a "splashy" half-open sound. I then adjust the offset till it plays that correctly. I may need to compromise if I can't get both sounds the way I like. I tend to favor the "chink" sound over the "splashy" sound.

I also like a decent amount of foot splash, so I turn that up.
