  • TD-20 vs TD-12

Currently I have the the TD-12 brain coupled with a TMC-6 that I run a couple of extra cymbals from.

I may add a couple of extra toms in the future but this is not a biggie at this time.

My question is ; I can upgrade my TD-12 brain to a TD-20 for about $1000,
will I notice enough difference in overall sound quality to be worth the cost?

I have noticed on the Vex site that TD-20 samples sound much nicer than TD-12 samples.

I am mostly concerned with final sound quality, as opposed to extra inputs and expansion.

    Thanks Again....

I think you'd be paying $1,000 for reverb and I doubt if you'd notice any other difference.

Does the reverb make any noteable amount of difference?

Well, that's probably the only difference you're noticing on the Vex kit samples:

Q: What are the differences between the TD-20 and TD-12 expansions?
A: All common settings between the two modules are exactly the same. The primary difference between the 12 & 20 modules will be the loss of reverb and other rarely used multi-effects the TD-12 does not offer. This is mainly limited to reverb in our expansions.

Well yes, it does. Whether it makes 1000 dollars worth of difference only you and your wallet know!

Serious, best would be for you to go listen to the two modules at a shop. Or, you have already said you think the vex packs for the 20 are superior - THAT was the difference. Can you afford it?

If you are happy with the way the 12 sounds (and you can always send it out through a mixer that has reverb), you save a bit of money. if you arent happy with them, and can afford it, the 20 also has more inputs and more tweaks you can do to the sound, even if vdrumlibrary opens up hidden cosm attributes....

EDIT: also, the coming expansion card will add new sounds to the 20. And other goodies. and soon afterwards, there will be vex packs to take advantage of the expansion -- but that would cost an addition 4 or 500 dollars....

          good luck!

Thanks guys, wow, this is an expensive hobby!
Oh well, usually if my brain starts tugging me in a direction I end up following it.
I may just do the TD20. My TD12 module is only 3 months old so what the heck....

Now wait a second, the ONLY difference between 12 and 20 are the effects on the 20? The 20 doesn't offer any additional inputs/outputs/jacks/plugs/switches/bells/whistles?

3 more inputs, 6 more direct outs, a footswitch quarter inch stereo jack, reverb, more cosm such as beater type for bassdrum, etc...
the td-12 has about 120k sound variations when the td-20 as over a million...

The OP stated he was only interested in final sound quality, and not inputs and bells and whistles..hence our answrers...

I have a feeling there's a multitude of GAS spreading vehicles around here!

I think the only reason to buy the 20 over the 12 is for the additional direct outs. There are cheap ways around any other differences. Just my opnion of course.

And the additional sounds from the expansion card, but I am not blown away at this time from them (again my opnion).

Yeah, the extra outputs will , of course, eventually be a plus for sure. I was curious as to how much difference the reverb makes.
Also, I do like the idea of the tambourines on the hihats. I have VDrum Library, and it adds the tambourines to the hihats, but I can't really hear them. I was kind of hoping they would work better too.
