  • TD3KW max number of inputs?

I've got a TD3 brain and wondered what the maximum number of inputs (with differing sounds) you can acheive and also how you do it if possible?

Currently have standard TD3KW kit - 5 drum pads, hi-hat + 2 cymbals, but would like to expand it - 2 more drums + 2 more cymbals if possible.

    Cheers

    Steve

Hi,you get to add another crash .Should be able to make it what you want,tom/crash.Splitting is an option(same sound) but ill let those who know more tell you about that.It is pretty limited.

I think it allows 9 standard, or you can reassign the tom rim triggers to another 2 pads, but of course you lose the rim triggers, maybe this is not so important depending on what kind of stuff you play.

Wow, I thought they were dual zone toms. I'm REALLY glad I went with the 9 now...

            Thanks for your replys.

Looks like I might need a new module. I'm thinking of 5 toms, snare, hi-hats + kick and 4 cymbals, all with different sounds.

What module would you guys recommend and is this possible without spending big bucks?

            Thanks again.

            Steve

BTW just bought a Jobeky 12" snare, so will be interesting to see how this compares the 8" Rowland mesh snare!

I have a TD-3 and a TD-6. I have a few setups where I have 6 toms. I midi them both together and use the TD-3 like a TMC-6. I turn off the instruments for toms 1 & 2 on the TD-3, and use midi to put the TD-6 toms 1 & 2 to them. Then use the regular TD-6 inputs for toms 3 to 6. For the rest of the setup I have 7 cymbals, 2 snares, 2 HH and 3 bass drums.

If you want everything from one module, then the TD-20 would probably be the only one you could go with. The TD-12 could come close, but if you had 5 toms, you'd only get 3 cymbals.

                Hi Drunzilla

                Thanks for your reply.

Not sure I understand totally - ignorance

From what you say it seems that it is possible to connect the midi out from one brain to the midi in on another (master - slave) and then use (and map to individual sounds) the inputs on both?

I.E. 1 brain providing the sounds for 3 drums & a couple of cymbals and the other for the remainder of the kit?

Is this correct or have I misunderstood your posting?

                Regards

                Steve

                  Steve,

I connect a cable from the MIDI In of my TD-6 to the MIDI Out of my TD-3. Just doing this will get you double the amount of sounds on when you strike a pad plugged into the TD-3 (both TD-3 and TD-6 sounds will go at the same time). I can change what the instrument is by changing the MIDI Note #. The TD-6 manual has charts on MIDI note numbers and instruments. I change the MIDI Note # for toms 1 & 2 on my TD-3 to the ones that correspond to my chosen toms 1 & 2. Then I have to turn the instruments to 'off' on the TD-3. Otherwise, I'll hear toms 1 & 2 from the TD-6 as well as the regular TD-3 tom 1 & 2 sounds. If I don't want to have other random instruments playing when I strike a pad connected to the TD-3, I need to turn the MIDI Note # to 'off'.

Hope my wordy explanation helps. Some of the MIDI stuff I figured out from Mike Snyder's book "All About Electronic Percussion". He has a few chapters on MIDI. After reading that, you just figure everything out by playing with MIDI cables connected to outs and ins and see what you get.

I also have a setup I play at church where I MIDI both my TD-3 and TD-6 to an MC-303. I turn down the volume on the TD-3 and TD-6 and just play handbell sounds from the MC-303 on the chorus of our opening song.

Really can turn the whole kit into a more melodic instrument.

FYI - I use a mixer to do all of this. The MIDI cable won't carry audio so I connect the audio outs of all my sound sources to a mixer.

                    Hi Drunzilla

                    Thanks for your reply.

I wonder if it would be possible to do what you suggested for all the inputs on the TD3?

This would then give an additional 5 drums and 3 cymbals

                    Regards

Not sure if I get your meaning. I use a TD-6 and TD-3 in tandem. I use the TD-3 for 2 toms, 2 BD, 3 cymbals, 1 HH and 1 Piccolo snare. The TD-6 runs 4 toms, 1 BD, 4 cymbals, 1 HH and 1 regular snare.

I do have some pictures of my setup in the kit pix thread.

you could use a TMC-6 to add additional pads.

Oh no, now we start this again. Allegedly, even tho the TMC will work with the 3, it will only increase the number of pads, not the number of sounds that can be triggered, as it can only either trigger an existing pad sound, or a percussion set, which the 3 doesnt have....

What I meant was it might be possible to use all of the TD3's inputs in the same way you have aleady used 2 of them in conjunction with the TD6?

The three doesnt off rim switches on the toms or the cymbals, only on the snare, so you cant split inputs as you can on the 6.
