  • Best 2 zoned Hi-Hat cymbal-suggestions???

    Hi everyone,

As long as I've been playing & keep reading...I still don't know what 2 zoned hi hat to go with. I have a Hart gigapro set and use a TD-20 & TD-8 for my sound modules. I've already done some upgrades with a few 2 zoned toms(Roland and a nice DYI 8" that I got from Jman---Jman is one of the nicest guys I've ever dealt with and bought many things from him)

Also upgraded Hart snare (upgraded to TE 3.2 technology).

I just picked up a couple of PD-8's to add to my arsenal (via Ebay---got lucky, great sellers and the PD-8's are like new). Tried one on as a 2 zoned hi hat just to see what I've been missing using my single zoned Hi hat Ecymbal by Hart.

As much as I'd like to use my Hi hat stand with a new 2 zoned Hi hat cymbal, I have a problem with space. So I'll just use the Hart pro Epedal I've had for 5 years and continue using the arm/mount on my rack.

I'm open to suggestions from those with a lot of experience with GREAT 2 zoned Hi Hats.

Also....I've been quite busy this summer so I haven't been around here. Already Preordered the new TDW-20 expansion card from RMCaudio....can't wait!!!

    Also...another side note:

Alan's Vexpressions packs that I bought from him on my birthday back on May 5th are quite amazing. Too many to say which are my favorites, but I love the 1952 Slingerland set for certain songs we've been playing. Alan does great work. I know I could pull off some of those sounds (if I had the time) but those tweaks that Alan has made and the time he must have spent on those kits is worth ever penny. Again GREAT work, Alan!!!

Looking forward to your input for the Hi hat,

    Thanks, Mick

The VH-12 is the best hi-hat for the TD-20, bar none. But it is expensive and needs a hi-hat stand. For my second TD-20 module I use a CY-5, mounted on an L-rod, and it works great.

I'd say look in our classifieds and pick up the brand new Hart for a song! But, yes you have to have the stand.

Are you saying that the Hart ECII hat requires the Hart EPEDAL II? If that is what you meant, that isn't so. You can mount it to any static hat stand with a FD-8 or comparable pedal. You can also mount it to a standard hat stand IF you use something like the Pintech Visu-Lite Hi-hat Controller with the stand.

If that's not what you meant, then this has been a public service announcement.
Hawk snare, toms, and bass; Hart ECII crashes & ride; VH-10 Hihat; Iron Cobra double-bass.

Thanks, Fullback--I didn't know that. I really like my Hart setup (I have an FD-8 to use with SPD-S and the feel doesn't compare to the Hart), though so I wouldn't want to change. Do you use the Hart hat stand or one of the others?

              Hey Michael...
you got me thinking (very dangerous place for me to be )

How do you keep the CY-5 on an L-rod? does it swing or is it locked in place via other typical Hi-Hat hardware?
Doesn't that type of cymbal normally use the special Roland mount so the cymbal swings (like most Rolands)?

The CY-5 comes with two mounts. A rotation stopper so it can swing and a tight mount so it can fit snugly on a L-Rod. I use the snug mount so it feels like a hi-hat. Kudos to Roland for good design on that one.

                  Thanks for the info, Michael...
I'm very surprised that they offer both mounts for the CY-5.

I know you can't compare it to the VH-12, but do you think it would hold up for using as a Hi-Hat for a couple of years? I use light sticks.
Would you say it's got better sensitivity on the rim compared to the PD-8 I was testing out?

For what it's worth, my first e-kit was a set of rubber Roland pads. I substituted a CY-5 in the hat position and moved the original PD-8 hat over as a fourth tom instead. I thought that CY-5 was the best $85 I'd ever spent. Personally, I thought it made a world of difference - much, much better and more responsive than using the PD-8 as a hat.

I was really impressed with the CY-5 when I had it. If and when I upgrade modules and have more inputs available, I wouldn't hesitate to add another one back into my kit.

                        Re Hihat:

                        I agree with Sizzle...I use PD-8's ...nice rebound & they're 2 zoned !

Oh by the way...many thanks to Chris Jude's posting the pic of his custom throne from SoundSeat...I had JR make Jennifer Batten a custom guitar throne for her visit...purple leather with her name & new CD embroidered in the leather. That sucker sits like a charm...I'll be ordering the "AlienFunk" one soon !

Bet SuperPuss would like to see a custom purple throne !!

                        Best to all,

I have a VH-12 and a CY-5 mounted right next to each other and I play them together all the time. (My big fat feet rests on a hi-hat pedal and a FD-8 at the same time) I wouldn't give up the VH-12 for the CY-5, but it is definitely my second choice.

I tend to play hi-hat rims with the neck of my stick and the bow with the tip and both the VH-12 and CY-5 handle that admirably. I get more control of the intermediate sounds with the VH-12, of course, but I can do a passable Purdy Shuffle with the CY-5 and still get a throaty, semi-open sound.

I use a static (Pearl) hat mount with an FD-8 pedal. I am going to get the EPEDAL II sooner or later, but I am now in the process replacing my Smartrigger crashes with Harts so it'll have to wait a little longer.

                              Thanks again, Everyone!

This CY-5 sounds like a good choice until I can spend a bit more & find enough room to set up my HH stand. I'll probably use my Ecymbal II single zoned HH cymbal as an addition ride or crash.

                              Pre-odered TDW-20 coming SOON!!! (Sept???)
