SPD-S: Can't get effects working

I've had my SPD-S for months now but this is the first time I'm trying to get effects working on individual patches. For some reason no matter what I try I don't hear any effects on any wav/patch. I use headphones at home whenever setting up samples or editing on the SPDS. Do the effects go out the headphones too or just the main outs? BTW, I've forgotten how much the SPDS manual sucks. Can someone please tell me how to get an effect going on a wav or in a patch? Big thanks!

Oh man, do I feel like a frigging idiot. I had the damn Effects Switch set to off on pad control. Sheesh! All day I've been banging my head over this. DOH! Well, maybe this'll help out the next idiot too.

i dont like the way effex are set up on spds. too much assigning and turning on stuff.
