  • Eliminating Crosstalk Without Gain/Threshold

So I'm new here seems like a great forum I've already learned a couple of things just from reading some random threads. I have a TSM Digital Drum (nearly identical to the more popular and well-documented dd-502) that I bought from Sam's Club. It's the cheapest kit around, I know that, but I'm not using it as my main drum. I have a set of acoustics but I want to hook this set up to Rock Band, the video game. I have already done this and it works, however I am having HUGE crosstalk issues.

It's strange though, because I have no issues when just playing through the headphone jack. It's just when I am plugged into through MIDI. All I have to do is tap the stand and nearly all of the pads go off. Unfortunately, as this is such a cheap kit, there are no gain or threshold settings to mess with. Since this is basically just for a video game, I certainly do not want to buy a more expensive kit. So I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to avoid the crosstalk. I have made sure the stand is secure and sturdy, and everything is as tight as possible.

I'm thinking that perhaps there is something I can do to the sensors such as put something over them to stop them from being so sensitive; I'm really not sure and I would really appreciate some help, as I have already put a great deal of time and money into the configuration for the the game, I certainly would like to get it to work somehow.

Thank you very much for any answers!

    Welcome to the forum!

Seems Rock Band is one of the major new areas of concerns these days. Mods, perhaps a separate section for Rock Band relatated posts?

You are likely getting some the cross-talk in your headphones, but you don't hear it because the sound level of the drum you hit drowns out the sound of the other miss-triggered pads or there is a pre-set cross-talk threshold.

In the case of Rock Band, it probably does not bother to quantify the sound level (velocity) of the struck pad, rather simply whether any signal, no matter how slight, might have been sent by that pad. This makes perfect sense. Why would Rock Band care about velocity or any nuance?

Putting each pad on its own stand would likely solve the problem.

Thanks a lot for your response. You're absolutely right, Rock Band certainly doesn't care about velocities but rather if a note comes in at all. And I just tried putting headphones on and turning the sound all the way up and it seems that the notes do come through, it is just so quiet that when playing at normal volume I had no chance of hearing it.

Putting each pad on its own stand does sound like it would do the trick, and wouldn't be too terribly expensive. Any suggestions on what would be the best way of doing something like that, or would the DIY forums be the better place to go?

And one more thing, since making a stand isn't my ideal plan, although probably going to end up happening. If anyone is familiar with MIDI, in order to get the drums working with rock band, I use a MIDI decoder and I have to supply a code , which basically states when I hit a Hi-Hat, trigger the Yellow Button to an Xbox. I don't know why, but I seem to have a hunch that I should be able to tell this code to only trigger that yellow button if a certain velocity is reached on the pads. This would solve my problem if it were possible, anyone know if is? The manufacturer does not seem to want to get back to me.

And again, thanks for any answers!

Which MIDI decoder are you using?

The decoder is an MSA-P from HighlyLiquid, however I have found a fix! For some reason, the bass pedal was messing everything up and I don't understand why, but I'm certainly not going to complain. When I unplugged the bass pedal, I had barely any crosstalk I really have to pound in order for it to do anything. Luckily I was just able to use the rock band pedal, which is terrible, but it is certainly better than nothing. I'm not sure why, perhaps there was some sort of interference but it's all good now so again, I'm not gonna worry much about it. Thanks much and if anything, found a great forum out of the deal.
