  • Installed VEX kits and it reset my 'settings'!

I finally got my Edirol MIDI cable and finally managed to install some VEX kits on my TD-8.

But after doing this, everything seemed to go wrong.. The sensitivity of my pads changed and I had Crosstalk all over the place.

When I looked at the settings I found the reason why.. Everything had been changed!!

Before I installed the VEX kit, I had taken a dump, and when I 'sent' this back, all my settings were restored.. So it seems that a SYX file contains setting info, as well as 'kits'.

But when I install VEX (specifically 'Elite') it screws up my settings (I assume that its sets them to what ever the VEX guys have set on THEIR TD8).

How can I get around this? Should I just upload them, change my settings back to normal and then download them again.. Or is there a way to send SYX data but ONLY transmit the kits?

As always, thanks in advance for your help?

I look forwards to your replies

    Jon

With VDrumLib, you can copy the "setup info" from your "personal backup" and then copy in the "kits" from our files... send it all to the module and your good to go!

Interesting... Am I right in thinking that I use VDL to create a SYX (made up of various kits, settings etc) and then 'send' that to the TD-8.

Or is there a way to send what ever is loaded into VDL at that time?

The only 'send to brain' option I have found is using the top menu.. But I wonder if there is a way to just send a few kits at a time?

I have had a little play with VDL and can't find any way to combine KITS and SETTINGS from different SYX files.. But I think I have found a way around it and would be grateful if someone would verify if this is OK.

Interestingly, only my 'ELITE' VEX kit has this problem.. 'MASTER50' does not appear to contain any 'setting' info...

I have loaded the 'ELITE' SYX into my TD-8 and then re-dumped it as 'KITS -> ALL", back to a file.. So now I have a SYX file which I think only has 'kits' in it.

I have also loaded my original kit into the TD-8 and then do a bulk dump of "SETTINGS" and saved this to a file.

So now I have the ability to just send 'SETTINGS' to the module IF I ever overwrite them again.

I must admit that I am surprised that VDL only has the ability to send an entire SYX or individual kit.. I can't believe that you can't select multiple kits and hit 'send' (just like you can do with TDStudio).

I know there is a new version coming, I really hope that this feature is in it!!

Yes, I think the steps you've taken are one way to overcome the limitations as VDrumLib only copies setup info for a TD-20. But you could have dumped your settings and kits and then copied the VEX kits into that file. It is strange and confusing that some VexpressionsLtd packs for the same module include settings and others are just kits.

Nothing in the tutorial talks about anything relevant to my problem...

Sounds like you figured it out. Sorry that I had to take off this morning and couldn't follow up sooner.

I know the TD-8 is limitied in VDL. I would suggest contacting Ken for support. He'll tell you exactly what you can do to sort out the settings/kits issue. However, I do believe that you have to create the new sysex at the computer, save it and then send it. (sorry, I'm not as familiar with the TD-8 as John and Chris)

No problems.. Would it help if I sent you back a 'clean' SYX file which no longer contains the 'setup' info?

As I said, the Master50 is fine, but the "Elite" contains your setup data and this is bound to cause future customers problems!

Just drop John an email about this and I'll let him send me a new version if you think it will help customers in the future. Elite was designed before VDL - thus, one reason why the difference.

As I'm thinking about this, have you tried TDM8? I seem to remember John providing indy kits for TDM8. (if I remember correctly)

Correct. However, write John through your expansion page. Share all this info with him. As I said, this is an older pack you're talking about, but if he wants to update it, we'll get a new version out.

Just a quickie for you Alan on this subject but for TD20. I'll be buying the Drummers Dream pack either late next week or early the following week (depending how slow Paypal funding is) and am wondering if I'll have any issues with settings if I copy individual kits from a CF backup into my TD20?

No, kits are kits and your settings will stay intact if you are only copying in a kit. Don't worry, I'll help ya out if you have questions.
