Apologies for the spelling of "cable" in the poll - I couldn't find how to edit it. However, if you've used a calbe instead, we'd like to hear about that as well!!

Is that the ~$16 one that's recommended here? If so, that's the one I have and it's worked perfect every time.

      Edit* Mine is Cable 1.

Can you please indicate that in the poll? Thanks.

This poll is a bit misleading. The question should ask if they have problems sending and receiving sysex messages. I don't think I've ever seen any complaints about simple MIDI note on/off messages. I've only seen complaints about sysex messages.

I have heard complaints from more than 20 individuals that have had problems "backing up kits" with a USB to MIDI cable purchased from Dealextreme. But, I don't have proof that they really bought their cable from dealextreme. Also, Dealxtreme does show two cables, so I also don't know WHICH cable they bought from dealextreme. I wonder if maybe one of the two cables works and the other doesn't. Or, maybe dealextreme has changed their supplier and they ship you the new one regardles of which you order.

All I know for a FACT is that some cheap cables DO NOT support sysex message transfers with ANY software on the PC -- MIDI-OX, VDL, TDStudio, etc. So, buyer beware.

If you want to save a few bucks, then go ahead and take the risk. If it works, then that is great. If it doesn't, then just send it back and move on to a new cable.

Add 2 more votes to "Cannot get to work"

okay, I just got two more people today with dealextreme cables that do not work with sysex! They work with MIDI note on/off, but not with long sysex messages used in Roland VDrum backups. I told them to report it to dealextreme -- maybe they have a bad run of cables and they need to be notified.

One last post on the subject. Dealexteme sells two cables. So, please specify which of the two cables you purchased when you comment on the performance:

                Cable 1: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.730

                Cable 2: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11277

I can comfirm that at least one of the bad cables is this one: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11277

                Thanks,

                  Thanks for clarifying SD.
I agree that my poll was perhaps too simplistic, but I was keen to try and quantify the anecdotal evidence which was cropping up in various threads.
Also, I did in fact state quite clearly in my recommendation that it applied to the first cable (sku 730) and that I had not tested the newer 11277 cable.
Again, my suggestion to prospective buyers is to avoid the latter one and go with the first which has been proven by quite a few of us. And if it doesn't work, you'll be able to get a refund - they're very good about that sort of thing.
And SD, I guess you and the VEX guys would be well-positioned to know what's going on because you'd hear about the problems. Can I suggest you "splash out" on one of these babies so you can see for yourself. I'm sure $17 won't break the bank - and it's tax-deductable!!
                  Thanks again,

                  AJ

                    Thanks again,
I've done better than that. I already arranged to get one of the bad ones directly from a customer. This way I will know that the unit I am getting is truly representative of one that someone struggled with and couldn't get to work. The one that he is sending me is sku 11277.

If anyone has a sku 730 that doesn't work. I'm interested in buying it from you, or trading it for a free VDrumLib license. So, please let me know.
