TD20 Recording drums to existing user pattern

I midi'd in a drumless midi-file song from my laptop and saved it as a user pattern (it's backing instruments only, no drums or percussion).

I want to record/add my drum parts to it, but I can't seem to hear a pattern and record a pattern at the same time.
Am I missing something?

It plays fine on it's own, but when recording, it doesn't play. Also, recording of my drumming writes over the existing music.

After you press REC, but before pressing PLAY; on the PATTERN REC STANDBY screen, move down to the Rec Mode field and change it from REPLACE to LOOP ALL (by pressing "-" three times); then PLAY.
