Trouble with CY-5 Hat

I just purchased a new TD-9s. This kit comes with a CY-5 Hi-Hat cymbal. I seem to be having trouble when I am playing the Hi-Hat open (foot not on pedal). For the first few strokes I get the desired open Hi-Hat sound...but after a while the sound will intermittently go to the closed sound (the cymbals together). I've played with this multiple ways. I am not hitting the symbol on the rim or with the shoulder of the stick. This problem just seems to happen randomly wheather I am playing hard or soft.

Has anyone who is playing with a CY-5 cymbal experienced this? Is this more of a modual problem? Is it a pedal problem with the FD-8? All comments are welcome. Thanks

Check the connections to the CY-5 itself. It may not be plugged in all the way. As for the module end, I'm not sure how to check that out since it's a one-cable DB25 connection. Maybe one of the leads for the CY-5 is also loose?

It's probably not a problem with the CY5, but rather the HH control pedal. Check that cable first. It might be a bad potentiometer in the pedal or something giving bad signals to the module.

x 2 to that. It could also be the seating of the DB25 multi connector too. Try unplugging and reconnecting it.

I've checked the cable connection to the CY-5 but I'll check the connections to the pedal and the modual to see if that helps. Thanks

Hammie, I can't remember how to get to it, but I do remember there is a display screen in settings that shows the pedal and moves up/down as you press the pedal. You could bring that screen up and hit the HH with the foot off the pedal and see if the closed sound gets tiggered. Watching the screen should show if the potmeter is opening/closing on its own.

I'll check tonight if you can't find that screen I am talking about.

This may sound like really basic stuff, but EVERY previous Roland module I know of cautions that it is critical that the pedal NOT be depressed when powering up the module, as uneven (and random) triggering may result. If you haven't been doing so, make sure your foot is NOT on the pedal at power-up.

Very good point. The TD-9 manual also includes the typical warning:

Caution when turning on the power
After you turn on the power, do NOT touch any pads or pedals until the drum kit name has appeared in the display. Doing so can cause various problems.

To get to that screen, you need to:
1. press the setup button
2. press F1 (TRIG)
3. press F3 (ADVNCD)
4. press F3 (HI HAT)

Hi hammie,

I suggest you use the process of elimination;
- after first checking the connections at the pads and at the module, if you still get the problem then:
- plug the HH cable into one of your CY-8s - if you still get the issue then you know it's not the CY-5.....
- plug the cymbal cable into the CY-5 - if you get the issue that confirms it is the CY-5.....
and so on

..if all else fails there's always the factory reset button - this has solved many problems in the past for me
