  • TD12 or TD20 or Megadrum?

    Hi,
i have recently sold my TD-6V and i need to purchase a "better" module. However i cannot decide if i'd go for a TD12 or a TD20 or run with Megadrum trough my computer.

Can any of you guys/gals give me some hints? I am looking for the most realistic sound that can be reproduced with a module or software.

    Thanks again,

    Kari

Im interested in megadrum but im not good enough at soldering/electronics.... Megadrum would be a lot cheaper if you can build it. Im guessing the td-12 and td-20 can run into a computer anyway and therefore the realism of your sounds depends completely on the quality of the software making the sounds. Ive never used software for drum samples so I don't know what would sound best

And I agree, people should to listen to strapping young lad!

Is the TD-20 really worth the extra money? I have tried the TD-12 and i was blown away when i compared to the TD-6.

I already have DKFH and i have succesfully hooked that up my TD-6. However im missing a headphone amp, so i could not really compare it to the TD-6 but from what i hear from my speakers was very very good! The bad news is that i took about 2 minutes before the neighbours started to knock.

I think i'll order the Megadrum kit and give that a try. It is not that expensive and has a lot of inputs. And i need a good headphone amp too. Anyone have schematics for a decent class-a amp with balanced (xlr) inputs?

The only thing i'm worried about is that when sometime in the future i join a band and possibly start giggin is the megadrum + computer really the way to go? I work with computers everyday so i know that **** can happen and if that happens 5mins before a gig or during a gig that would really suck.

      Thanks,

      Kari

As long as you are careful with your pc, it should be ok. Kep it off the net, use a ups and run a stripped-out version of xp. Also, a decent strong case to protect the components, maybe a rackmount with the megadrum?

Thx to everyone for the inputs!

I have chosen to go the Megadrum route and i have ordered parts + pcb for it.

Later on i will need a dedicated computer for this and have been thinking about Mac Mini.

Is anyone out there running Mac for their edrumming needs? Is the MacMini soundcard worth anything? Or should i start thinking about a firewire card also?

          Thx again,

Ruffneck - did you complete your Megadrum kit? If so, please post back the results and some photos. I currently have an ancient Alesis DM4 with all of the inputs maxed and I could use some more. Additionally, I mostly run it direct into my PC and run drum synths like Addictive for my sounds, which obviously are better than the DM4. The icing on the cake is the DM4's horribly restrictive on/off hi-hat pedal which I hate with a passion.

Megadrum would rule my world! But I'd need it in a classy rack-mount chassis.

              Hi,
well i'm almost there. I have populated most of the pcb. I'm not going to fit mine in a 19" box, but into one of these https://www1.elfa.se/elfa~eu_en/b2b/...browserminor=4

I will be ordering front and backpanels for that box from http://www.schaeffer-ag.de/. They have a nice service. You download their cad software (for free), design your panels, get pricing for it directly from within the software. When you are happy you order it trough the same software. They also have the same service in the US called http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/

I'll post more pictures as soon as i make some progress.

Here is a pic of the almost fully populated pcb:

And here is the backpanel for my Megadrum build. This is not the actual panel but a drawing of it. This is the one i'm going to order. Aux 7 did not fit here so i'm drilling a hole for it on one side, if i ever need that input.

And the front. What is still missing from this one is the buttons. I have not found any suitable yet. I'll search more tomorrow so i can finally order these panels and finish my Megadrum. Maybe this should be moved to the DIY section?
