  • Direct out

I am using the Direct out 1, 2 and 3 to go over to my mixer. I have my snare and kick on direct 1, my toms on direct 2 and my cymbals on direct 3. My problem is that the kick needs a lot of bass and the snare does not. Can I use the master out for the snare with out causing any problems? Should I run my snare with the toms or cymbals?

Why can't you use the last out for your snare alone?

I am not at home to look but I think there are 3 direct outputs and one main output. Can the main output be used the same way as the direct outputs are?QUOTE]Originally posted by acidbran:

The outputs are stereo. I have mine setup using Direct out 1 for kick/snare (kick panned left and snare panned right), Direct out 2 for the toms (L/R stereo) and Direct out 3 for the cymbals (L/R stereo). I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ-Pro mixer that I run those 6 into and mix that down to 2 stereo channels for the sound guy.

Rappy (and to drumbeat8u further down),

If you are just going to send one stereo pair to the mixer/engineer, why not just use the stereo outs (or a direct out pair) to the engineer and do all of the "sub mixing" in the td-10? What benefit is the Mackie giving you? Just an observation.

You are right in the way you're sending them, though. More or less the way I set up to record via the multiple outs, except, each out goes directly to a track rather than being mixed to stereo before recording, again, in which case I would just send a stereo mix to begin with.

            drumbeat8u:
From your description, all you need to do is pan them properly. With the Kick panned full right, and snare panned full left, you will have discreet outs for each drum. The engineer can pan them anywhere he wants in the "house mix" individually (hopefully center), assuming that you are running stereo in the "house". If you are running mono, he probably has everything either panned center or panned for grouping on his end, so positioning on his end will not affect the stereo spread.

Just remember, just because you have the kick "panned" all the way right, it should not "sound" all the way to right, if done correctly.

            Hope that helps.

              Also,

Yes the mains work the same way, but be aware that ALL ambience defaults to going out the mains...you need to either redirect it, turn it off, or accept the fact that the ambience from the toms will be on the snare channel, etc.

If you set up your Direct Out #1 as in Raffy's post, your sound guy can adjust EQ and then pan it back into a stereo mode. Problem solved.

Another approach would be to go to the Control Room EQ and adjust the kick's EQ from there.

Note that you can also adjust the Master EQ (F4). The Master EQ has no affect on the Direct Outs, so you could EQ your kick into oblivion by using the Control Room EQ and the Master EQ.

I use the mackie to setup a headphone mix, with a monitor send that is run from the sound guy, as well as mix down the drums. Also I think it's easier to control the effects(turn them up or down, eq them...) with the mixer.

redbrick, My setup is for playing live. For recording I bypass the mixer.(all 6 channels into the recorder) I don't really like having to crawl into the brain every time I need to turn up all of the cymbals or toms.(no I don't have the exp card yet )

What Boingo said about the eq. I don't really like the way it's done in the brain, and you can usually get better eqing out of a mixer that has 3 or more bands of eq, vs. high and low shelving.

I've gotcha, Raffy. Kind of how I do it live at church...except...I have three direct boxes, one out for each of kick, snare, "everything else", which go to direct boexes - to the snake - to the board. The mixing board then sends an aux to a small mackie that I input into a channel and have headphones in the mackie board. I just have the right amounts of each channel sent back tio me.

So the difference is just that you control your submix and I let the mixer control the submix, as the returns to the mackie are pre EQ stage, he can EQ to the house without screwing up my monitoring.

You don't have the expansion?!?!? Poor guy...I really enjoy not having to set all those outputs up per kit...with the tdw1 there is a toggle that lets you apply the same settings to all kits, and then when you toggle it back off to get the outputs chosen by each kit. Should have been in the original, but was definitely appreciated by me for the upgrade...not to mention the new sounds...I'm sorry. Buy one now.
