  • Just tried ddrum tiggers with mesh heads

I just tried a 10" tom with a ddrum redshot trigger mounted and connected to a ddrum 4 brain and later with a Yamaha DTXPRESS brain.
The result was somewhat a dissapointment, the redshot trigger worked quite well with the ddrum 4 brain, however the low velocity strokes did not trigger with as near as good resolution as with the ddrum pads.
With the DTXPRESS brain it did work the opposite, when stroking hard the trigger (or mabey the DTXPRESS brain) read the signal as a low velocity stroke. Hmmmmm.....any suggestions on how to correct this? Mabey tuning the tom extremely high will do the trick. Has anyone experience of triggering with redshot triggers and mesh heads?

I was considering trying this myself using a roland mesh skin on a roto tom.
    Are u using roland mesh?
If someone got this to work with a Roland brain that would be great.
Reverse velocity? Maybe the red shot trigger's polarity is reversed(?).
Maybe the ddrum version update will increase your sensitivity.

No,I was using a no-name mesh (not the best around). The velocity was not reversed only sometimes when hitting the drum hard the DTXPRESS did recognize it to be a soft stroke. My theory on this is the position of the trigger (near the rim) and how hard the mesh are tuned. I think these in the right balanced combination are essential for a smooth working drum trigger. I am considering to build my own "cone trigger pad" I belive that that is the way to get the most accurate velocity response.

What firmware version was the ddrum module? Ddrum modules with V1.40 and above have settings for acoustic triggers and mesh heads. In the V1.40 start with the AC1 setting, and tweak from there... With V1.50 use the NH1 setting...

It makes a world of difference.

I got mesh heads on a 10" rototom.

The tracking is actually better than the
mesh heads mounted on my regular kit.
          (I use red shot triggers)

The only problem is that the mesh skins
flex a bit too much so you end up hitting
          the rototom construction underneath.

Still the skin has lasted for over 8 months
But the "X" is a permanent feature to its
          design now!

Hey erik, the AC1 settings are for acoustic drums aren't they? Don't the previous versions have these settings as well? Or are the AC1 settings of a 1.4 different than with a previous model?

The 1.40 has algorythms for mesh heads...the earlier versions don't...thats the difference.. It is called NH1 in the V1.50...same thing though.

Yeah I know version 1.40 was the first with mesh head algorithm and they are called NH1 in V1.40 as well.
AC1 is for acoustic drums, so if that works it is not really necessary to have v1.40 or higher is it?

That seems to be true for some folks, Pieter (based on some posts I recall reading over at the land of the little red people)...

I would expect that the preferred setting will really depend on various factors such as the type/manufacturer of the mesh heads, playing style, sticks, etc. Different results maybe, for different folks .

But that kicker here is that you won't know until you have tried both settings whether or not you really need v1.4...

                  E-drums: TD-20, RT-5S triggers on snare/toms, KD-7s, VH12, CY-14Cs, CY-15R, Pintech splash.
A-drums: Zickos (amber) w/ all Zildjians.

                    Hey ddummer
You must hit extremely hard!, have the skin very loose, or have the roto put together upside down.
