  • Spill between outputs.

I know this has been discussed before and ive reread the threads.
I was trying to record a multitrack version of Pattern 1 today to see how many seperate tracks I could get from the V-s.
Firstly let me say that the kit I was using was completly dry. All ambience,FX,EQ and compressor switches were off and all the relevent sends and returns were set to zero.

I was trying to record six separate mono tracks all at the same time by assigning two sounds to the same output and panning hard left and hard right.
This all seemed to be going ok till I noticed that on the ride track I could see (visually on the wave image on the screen)traces of the bass drum track.
So I solo`ed this track and there is a definate splill.
The spill comes from the kick drum which is panned left as well as the ride.
I thought at first that the spill might be within the soundcard on the pc which has 8 inputs so i pulled all the leads exept direct output 3 which had just the left channel plugged in.Ive now got only the one mono lead plugged into the TD10`s output with only the ride sound assigned to this output and on playing pattern 1 the ride is silent for the first couple of bars of that pattern and I can clearly hear the toms and the kick coming through.
Bringing down the volume faders for kick and toms confirmed that there was spill and also panning the kick hard right also got rid of it.
I`m just wondering if anyone else has come across this when using a completly "dry" kit and wether anyone could do a similar test to see if its just my module.
    thanks

I believe that there is a bit of spill from the master outs to the direct out pairs...minute, but it is there. I suppose you could gate it out as it is SO LOW LEVEL. If you EQ the track it will also probably go away. For example, if the kick bleeds a LITTLE on the cymbals stereo pair, you would be EQing out the low end on the cymbals anyway and with a shelving EQ, the kick would disappear.

Also, since you are only using 6 outs, you could just use all the direct outs instead of using the master out pair. I think that would eliminate the problem as well.

I think it's bad that this flaw is there, but it is pretty easy to work around and is so minute, it is FAR less than any mic would bleed. And I mean FAR LESS.

It has been discussed at length on the other email group as well, I believe. Maybe someone there would have an idea of how the problem could be fixed. I just don't recall which group service had the list...maybe Yahoo groups?

Hope that helps...you're not imagining it and it is not just your unit, though.

      Thanks redbrick
The spill is actually there when using only the direct outs as well.
The spill seems to be in the pan , in that you get no spill from left to right between different outputs.
It seems to be mainly the kick and toms.
I can get round it but it involves recording to midi and then playing back the pads one at a time which just make a simple task a bind.

I think this is one of those flaws with the V's that we just have to accept. As red said, the bleed on the outputs is far far less than when using mics on an acoustic kit - so in this sense it's an improvement!

Also at the end of the day, when you mix down it's (in 99% of cases) going to be un-noticable . . . the only situations it might be heard is where you're doing a lot of muting of tracks, but then you can kill the bleed with the EQ.

It is frustrating that the module isn't perfect: but it's still bloody good!

Unfortunately this is one of those 1% times times when mixdown is not an option and solo tracks is the whole idea.

I`m not knocking the V`s though because....

          wait for it...........

          I LOVE MY V`S

sorry its been a few months since I did that round here.

After much searching, this is the closest post I can find to what my issue is.

I'm still in the initial setup phase of my new Pintech Road Pro kit, using an un-exp TD-10. Before I had the kit, I was only able to "preview" the triggers. Everything was fine.

Now that I have the kit setup (temporarilly, need to finish painting the room these are going in) when I strike the bell or bow of the ride, I hear the kick. I also have the "3rd Zone" going to Aux1 input... this trigger does not have an issue.

I'm only using headphones, and this does not happen on every "kit" in the arsenal, but most.

I did a full Initialize of the module to get it back to factory settings, and I have yet to change out cables. They are all new, and are seated properly.

Should I be looking at the cymbal or the module to further troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance, I am working on doing a full review of the kit and module, but I just have not had enough TIME to work on my extra-carricular activities lately.

You hear ONLY the kick sound when hitting the ride on most kits?

I can't see any logical explanation for that, unless a previous owner had done something very unorthodox with the instrument settings.

You're quite sure the factory initialization was completed with SETUP followed by F4 four times?

Hey BarT, thanks for the quick reply.

To clarify, I hear both Ride AND Kick when striking those zones on the ride, and I'm pretty sure about the Init completing. It wiped out kit numbers 46-50 and reverted them back to "KitCopy4X"

Like I said though, I'm still tinkering and the kit is not in it's final location. I'll be pulling all the cables and setting it back up to a more permanent placement with cable management & the works.

                Hopefully that'll do it.

Any way that vibrations could be reaching the kick pad when you hit the ride?

How about the kick cable; is that routed on the rack near the ride?

Cross talk on a kick drum is unusual but not impossible depending on placement.

Good points. I will address the cabling prolly tomorrow when I am able to move the kit into its new home.

                    Thanks again for the help!
