I go by the old-school philosophy that if you need a bigger target, it's generally because you aren't good enough to hit the smaller ones."

I didn't slur anyone. I said I personally go by the old-school philosophy. It's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. Adding the comment not to flame me does point out the stupidity of flaming me.

Darren in Van: If you really want it, call Seattle GC. It is just a short drive away for you, bro. I don't know if they still have the demo or not, but it might be worth a phone call.
Actually, I had a longer session with the Sessions today, followed with a short stint on the DTXtreme. Bleagh!! I'm not sure I'm interested anymore. But thanks for the tip though.

As for the folks comparing the DTXtreme and the TD-8 kits, well, that's just apples and oranges. To be fair, compare the DTXtreme to the V-Session kit, which seems to be at the relative same state of tune, so to speak.
Hmmmm, given the relative costs, I think the fairer comparison is between the Yammy extreme and the TD-8 V-concert (roughly the same price), not the V-Session (way more). Comparing the session to the extreme is like comparing a BMW to a Honda, and slagging the Honda because it isn't as nice..... of course it isn't, it costs 50% less!!

As for the whole big-pads/small-pads debate, if you like the PD-80, more power to you. For me, I've been playing acoustic drums for 18 years, and I personally want something that is the same approximate size as a "real" acoustic drum.... just because that's what I'm used to visually. I think a kit with big pads *looks* cooler than one with small pads, and I think how an instrument looks is an important part of the musical instrument playing experience.... I were using e-pads as PART of a big-ass acoustic set up like Alan White, I would just use whatever was convenient and felt comfortable (because you've already got the monster set regardless of what e pads you use) but if the e-pads ARE the kit (as they will be in my case), then I want some visual mojo happening, and for me that means big pads.

Yeah, until I get my new acoustic kit (7-piece) I'm using regular size Arbiter Flats and my Pintech upright bass pad. But when I use my acoustic kit with add-on electronics, I want the smaller pads so the thing doesn't look too freakin' huge. Everything will be on a stand/rack system, so it needs to fit.

Actually, I plan on getting a DrumKAT DK10, along with one PD-80R for the snare. The PD-80R will be between my two acoustic snares, and the DK10 will be mounted above the aux. snare on my left. I might also get another DK10 to mount above my floor toms on my right. That way, I'd have 20 pads plus the PD-80R, Pintech K3, and Silentech bass pad.

I've ready most of your posts since you joined us. They tend to be strongly opinionated (IMO) but, as you point out, that's your right. I'm ok with that. It keeps the site alive and keeps many of us coming back.

What's occasionally annoying (IMO), is your tendency to pepper them with personal insult and innuendo. The stupidity remark is just one example. I've seen several others. I always smile when I read posts like that. I see some young hothead full of piss and vinegar typing furiously at his keyboard. So, keep em coming bro. When I see your posts I look for this kind of thing. And now that I have had the honor of being "Stoovied"... too much!
Kit Pic 1 Kit Pic 2 Kit Pic 3... And FOR SALE I have: 3 PD-9's, MDS-10 purple rack w/cables/pad and cym mounts. See classified posts for details or PM me.

Boingo, lose the 'tude. I simply stated my opinion and then you came off like I was insulting you or something, despite the fact that I had a clear disclaimer about my opinion. Actually, I didn't even say it was my opinion...I said it was old-school philosophy that I adhered to. Nothing more, nothing less.

                A set of DTXtremes for 1200.00(demo).I don't
think so.I played them and was very impressed.I just went with the roland\pintech
system because of price. Now I am wondering
if I made the right decision. The TD8 module
does not have any user storage? The yamaha
does. Why would anyone want to overwrite the
factory kits on the TD8?I wish I could figure
out how to save some user kits from scratch.

                  Hello 89vette, who said:

"Why would anyone want to overwrite the
                  factory kits on the TD8?"

I believe the answer is because there are no sounds on the factory kits which are not available to you in the instrument lists.

When you replace a factory kit, you merely delete the instrument choices made at the factory with your own choices, which you get at the same place thay got them at Roland - from the lists of different sounds.

That said, you will lose the factory (tweaking) settings for each instrument - the EQ, any compression, any ambience, tuning, and effects.

If you really like the factory sound for any instrument, write down the settings for that instrument sound, and convert the instrument sound in your new kit.

There may be an "Instrument Copy" function in the Td-8 - I don't know.

Also, the manual probably shows each instrument number for each kit in case you forget, but frankly, once you get into the exquisite joys of tweaking your personal instruments, ahem, you won't care anymore what the factory presets were.

After playing both the DTExtreme's -vs- the Roland's for pure realistic acoustic drum sounds for recording (all electronics are questionable at best live), I don't know anyone including both sales staff at Mars and Sam Ash who didn't agree the Yamaha's are way more transparent... at half the cost.

Given obvious discrepancies like tom clamps and batter heads that can be replaced, doesn't it all come down to the tone and resonance of the drum? Why else would some drummers pack multiple snares, etc?

Haven't decided which to buy yet, but I'd recommend an unbiased test drive of both...I did and it had nothing to do with "the fire sale".

I prefer the DTXtreme module to the TD-10 and TD-8, also prefer the feel of the Yamaha tom and snare pads over the Roland pads, but prefer the feel of the Roland V-Cymbals over the Yammies. Doesn't really matter though, since I've gone back to triggering acoustics, if using electronic sounds at all now, I've been going without the real thing for too long.
                      I miss-ed you, acoustics, I miss-ed yoo-hoo...
