CY-15R and TD-8

Hey there! I can't speak for the new Roland cymbals, but I just took BtnkBndt's advice and switched my Visu-lite dual trigger ride from the ride to the Aux input and the difference was AMAZING!!!! No more whacking the daylights out of the bell to get it to trigger. Thanks a lot, this is the kind of advice (as a V-Drum newbie) I love this site for.

BtnkBndt: thanks for the AUX tip. You may be right about that. I'll give it a whirl and let you know how it goes.

Steven and Stu: thanks for your input as well, but, once again, I'm using the TD-8, not the TD-10 .....

It'll require a good whack right out of the box, that's true, but once you've set it up it's quite sensitive. Here's a setup tip from Sweetwater.com, which I tried at a V-Session set at my local drum store:
SET THE TD-10 TO TRIGGER BANK #2! (It defaults to trigger bank #1). To do this:
a) Press "Set Up"
b) Press F1 "Trig"
c) Press F1 "Bank"
d) Use the cursors to highlight the number "1" (if it isn't highlighted)
e) Turn the alpha dial to bank "2"
f) Exit out

Now the V-Ride should be as sensitive as a baby's bottom.

This is starting to sound like your typical ecymbal ride with the addition of an fsr rim. I'm willing to bet the bow and bell are both piezos. The typical problem with the aftermarket rides is you have to really whack the bell to trigger it when used in a single input (fsr/piezo type input). You really should have tried it in the td-8's aux input to see if the bell triggered easily with the two piezo setup. I bet it would have. On the td-8 you will probably loose either the edge sound or the bell sound depending on which jack you choose on the cymbal pad. Maybe the bow/edge in the ride input with the appropriate sounds assigned and the bow/bell in the aux input (your looking at three actual inputs to get all zones to work maybe?). You have to remember even with the new tdw-1's v-cymbal addition it still needs two inputs on the td-10 to work.

I know that there have been quite a few inquiries on this site regarding how well the V-cymbals (the V-ride in particular) would function with the TD-8 as opposed to the expanded TD-10. I don't recall seeing any other posts out there from anyone who's had a chance to demo this particular combination (forgive me if there are). I had the opportunity to do so myself, so I thought maybe this would be of interest to some of the other TD-8 users out there:

I used the bow/bell output jack on the CY-15R and plugged it into the assigned ride jack on the TD-8. The results were, unfortunately, mixed. The bow section triggered just fine, but the bell was another matter. I had to really whack the bell trigger with the shoulder of the stick to get a satisfactory result, and it just wasn't consistent with my (or, I suspect, anyone else's) technique. I tried all the different pad settings with no better luck. So unless someone else out there has got some super-duper trigger settings that'll make this thing react as it should, it looks like it's CY-15R/PD-7/Shack Attack (or AUX jack) time ......
