Also agreed with Brian. Software should always strive to match the maximum potential of the hardware. Anything less would be a con.

I don't mean any desrepect to programmers achieving maximum software "efficiency" when I say that - as that's something entirely different and a lot more difficult.
It's the crippling the hardware via software means which aren't necessary / due to short sightedness of the product designer / director, which is not okay.

Saying that though, I suspect this alesis samplerack just isn't that powerful under the hood tbh. Build cost = hardware capability, 99% of the time.
It's in their best interest to make the most of what they have.

There is limitation on this Device\Coding, more layers would make the units almost stopping working, unless they limit the sample time shorter, it take time to load sample from the SD cards already when longer sample are used, they are using low amount of Ram (Akai MPX16 have 64MB) inside instead of Cache\ Memory from the SD cards like the Spd-SX using 2gig SD inside, Roland TM-2 using external SD cards, both without Ram which make no time loading. I am sure, Roland is coming whit a new device with sample capability triggers more expanded than the TM-2 in a near future.

So the Samplepad Pro's pads only have 2 layers when it comes to velocity aswell? Man, I was thinking about getting one for my setup to trigger percussion sounds, loops and random things like that. I probably won't be using it as the main thing in my setup, but if I ever want to trigger some, say, congas or whatever it would have been nice to have some layers on the sounds

each pad are velocity sensitive is 0 to 127, the velocity switch sound can be A (Single Sound) or A+ B (A + B, B will sound on harder hit) or AB (AB together simultaneous sound) Similar to Spd-30, Spd-S etc.

I just got the Alesis Sample Rack works like a charm , also the hihat you can use them as normal sound, 8 sample via midi extra or 16 samples with velocity switch.

Sd Cards are only velocity switch for each zone ( 2 sound per input trigger stated wrong on the User guide, it is clearly Each zone of each dual zone are Velocity switch A+B, up to 4 sound for each Trigger 1 to 7, 2 midi notes for each triggers 1 to 7.

              With Sd Cards
Snare, Each zone have 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B,+ 2 midi note (total of 4 sound each triggers + 2 midi notes triggers)

Tom triggers are Dual zone, Each zone have 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B,+ 2 midi note (total of 4 sound each triggers + 2 midi note each triggers)
Cymbals triggers are Dual zone, Each zone have 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B,+ 2 midi note (total of 4 sound each triggers + 2 midi note each triggers)

Kick one zone, 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B,+ 1 midi note (total of 2 sound)

              -Without Sd Cards
Snare Dual Zone, 1 sound each zone (total of 2 sound),+ 2 midi notes
Tom triggers are Dual zone, 1 sound each zone (total of 2 sound),+ 2 midi notes each triggers

-Each Cymbals triggers are Dual zone, 1 sound each zone (total of 2 sound),+ 2 midi notes each triggers

Kick one zone, 1 sound one zone (total of 1 sound),+ 1 midi note

              With Sd Cards
              Hi Hat A:
Open; + 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B,+ 1 midi note
              Mid ; + 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B + 1 midi note
              Close; + 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B + 1 midi note

              Hi Hat B:
Open; 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B +1 midi note
Mid; 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B +1 midi note
Close; 2 sound velocity switch sound A+B +1 midi note

HiHat Chick 1 midi notes, 2 sound velocity A+B
HiHat splash1 midi notes, 2 sound velocity A+B

Hihat: Total of 8 midi note and 16 samples

              Without Sd Cards
              Hi Hat A:
              Open;1 sound, 1 midi note
Mid 1 sound, 1 midi note
Close; 1 sound, 1 midi note

              Hi Hat B:
Open; 1 sound, 1 midi note
Mid; 1 sound, 1 midi note
Close; 1 sound, 1 midi note

HiHat Chick 1 sound, 1 midi note
HiHat splash 1 sound, 1 midi note

Hihat: Total of 8 midi note and 8 samples

Each 8 or 16 sample Hihat can be played Via midi as a normal trigger or drum, no need to be hihat device, you can assign any sound to them... I plugged my Spd-SX and I play these 8 midi note separately on the each spd-sx pad and all is fine like a drums.
              .
Kick, 1 midi note, 2 velocity switch sound A+B

You can leave B empty if you want even with the SD cards installed

Without SD cards you have a Total of 23 sound and 23 midi note
With SD Cards 46 samples sound with velocity switch or simultaneous and 23 midi note

There is more potential then the Sample Pad Pro, more layers capability on each zone and more sound. (Sample pad pro are limited to 8 one zone pad velocity switch internal sound with SD)

I am very pleased with the Capability and specially the velocity switch for each zone, including the kick and the HIHat, I can trigs 8 samples or 16 velocity switch sound via midi for the hihat with any sound assigned to the hihat open, mid, close chick and splash works as trigger, a could not ask more for this price.

With 2 Sample Rack 46 midi notes, 92 samples one with Midi in to out, if setup correctly we could have 4 sound for head and 4 sound for rim and 4 mains Outputs

              Exemple:
              MIDI Out to in
              Sample Rack 1: Head velocity switch sound A 000-60 B 50-70
Sample Rack 2: Head velocity switch sound A 60-90 B80-127

              Sample Rack 1: Rim velocity switch sound A 000-60 B 50-70
Sample Rack 2: Rim velocity switch sound A 60-90 B80-127

With 3 Sample Rack 69 midi notes, 138 samples 3 with Midi, if setup correctly we could have 6 sound for head and 6 sound for rim

Hello, would it be possible to modify the firmware of the sample rack? so that it would support more velocitylayers? This would be awsome

I think that this is a revolutionary value for the price point. Many seem to be concerned about the limitations of the velocity layering. Clearly this machine was made to be used with a computer. As soon as the signal is sent to the computer via Midi or USB you can easily make all the layers you want via VST. In FL studio, the FPC module supports 4 layers of velocity switched samples per pad while the "DirectWave" module supports up to 128 layers. That's more than enough for anybody. Although it would be nice to have all that in the box, it can easily be worked around by adding a PC or external hardware sampler. My point is, You couldn't find 8 trigger pads anywhere in the market for $199, think of the rom sounds and sample playback capabilities as a free bonus to the 8 trigger pads. Again with MIDI and USB, you are not limited.
