  • Laptop for SD?

    Hi all
I'm about to buy SD 2 and hope to get it all up and running fairly easily (ha ha!)
My question is what do you run yours on? I have a very average Toshiba laptop running w7. Will this do or do I have to go out and buy the latest Macbook?!
As usual trying to keep costs down!....

I believe Toontrack states that S2.0 minimum requirements are 2.0 GHz dual core processor with 2 gigs of ram would be sufficient however I would suggest a quad core and at least 4g of ram.

Use The Forum Search Engine - I'd use a MacBook. Fast integrated sound card.

I didn't know the "F" stood for forum! lol
I guess it depends on who is saying it.

Any new laptop bought in the last 2 years should be fine unless it came from the U.S. public school system maybe.

4GB is a good idea but 2GB is the minimum.

According to ToonTrack the system requirements are:
Windows 7 or newer, Pentium 4 or Athlon processor with 2GB RAM
Mac OS X 10.6 or higher, Intel-based mac with 2 GB RAM.

I have a MacBook Air 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 and SD 2.3 works just fine. In fact I contacted Toontrack before I bought and they confirmed that 2.0GHz was referencing single core processing speed. At 1.7G a dual core is like running 3.4 GHz in terms of overall/combined processing speed.

                Hope this helps.

Really sorry but I don't get it... If no-one answers me then its because I have posted a stupid question not worth answering!

Hope this helps, though I'm not a PC user. From my above post, Toontrack says you need:

It's not a stupid question, but it's a question that has been answered so many times already.

Starting new threads with the same question without looking it up if it was asked before just dilutes the information...
Plus, it tells me that people are getting lazier every year by just posting a question and letting others search for it...

                      To answer your question....

I have a MacBookPro 2008, 2.4 gHz dual core with 8G RAM and it plays SD2 very well, all the way down to 64 samples if I don't go overboard with the number of kit pieces. 128 samples for a full kit with extras plays fine as well.

So, even a 7-year-old laptop is able to handle SD2. I am not recording multitracks in a DAW at the same time though.
If you are looking at adding / recording tracks while using SD2, you will need a better computer.

A good rule of thumb is to step up (pretty much double) the lowest required specs and you'll be fine for some time.
So, if Toontrack says it plays with 2G RAM, get 4, if they mention a dual core, get a quad core and play hard!

                        Hey Perceval,

You know I’ve attempted to UTSE (no “F”) on this website but it really doesn’t work very well. I’ve run similar queries through Google with similar poor results. Now Alan says they (vB) are working on the Google thing but for now it’s really not very productive. So maybe just cut us some slack. If someone’s question annoys you, just don’t respond.

Sorry for being so frank but I was told this same UTSE thing awhile ago and it caused me to shy away from asking questions. I thought that’s what forums are for. People are complaining about people not visiting this site. Let’s be a bit more accepting.

Again, sorry for being so frank as I really don’t mean to be confrontational at all so please don’t take this personal – just saying.

Just to chime in and advocate for both your positions. EssKayKay is suggesting the search engine is cumbersome to use, and doesn't always lead us to the right thread. Perceval is suggesting we UTFSE so that the good information you might learn by asking a question ends up in the right thread. It's a bit of a chicken/egg scenario. I agree with EssKayKay that the built-in search engine could be more effective, but I also agree with Perceval that pooling information on key subjects benefits everyone. What might help overall is getting the Custom Google Search functioning the way it used to. For now, i don't mind addressing Q's that come up if I can help in any way.

I agree as long as the question is asked in only 1 thread. It seems lately more new members are posting the same question in more than one thread within minutes of each other. I would call that a type of spam. Maybe that is why some forums do not let new members post for awhile (I disagree with that policy).
To have a page or forum that can't be found by google and such ought to be a crime! The main reason I go to a forum is to search for information on a question I might have. If I don't find it then I ask.
I would much rather answer the question " which kit should I buy between this one and that one and why?".
Rather than "what is the best professional sounding kit I can get for under $200"
I would really expect someone to have put in a little work towards answering their own question.
Maybe it's just Me being crabby?
Anyway, carry on. I'm off the soap box (for now). LOL

Yes, the search function is not optimal at the moment, but it does provide some results to build a question from basic knowledge acquired.
