  • trigger foam cone question

How crucial is the firmness / rigidity of the foam to the sound, especially the dynamics? I think I may have found the source of the weak, bland sounds from my TD-30 bass drum sounds. It may be the foam cylinder on my piezo. When I copy my kick sound to a tom or snare for testing, the sound has more bass and is overall more dynamic when striking those drums vs the kick.

The foam cylinder on the kick trigger is slightly more rigid than my toms; could that cause a triggering that is less dynamic and flat? It seems only the volume varies with harder/softer hits, and I'm not getting the full sound of the "drum" that the module is capable of.

I cut out cylinders from sanding blocks. They are reasonably firm in my opinion and have a small hole through the middle where the drill bit went through whilst cutting. I use them on my two rack toms and I've had them installed on my L bracket for a few months now. I have lots of dynamics on these times with my td9 and triggering is superb with them so far. Could it just be a case of playing around with your settings?

The standard is called "Poron". I believe it's a soft or medium density. Jman will know for sure. I use Quartz cones and piezos for all my builds. Very inexpensive and extremely consistent and reliable. http://www.quartzpercussions.com/

Yeah, the Poron foam I prefer is called "Very Soft". Soft is a little bit firmer, but still good, and Quartz cones seem to be made of that or at least very similar in density. If you are planning to build a bunch of cylinders or cones it might be worth it to get some Poron foam, but as Dan says Quartz cones will do the trick.
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! ;)

Thank you all! I'll order the Quartz and try them.

Today I trimmed the foam down slightly thinking it might be extending too far above the rim, and under too much pressure with the head tightened. This did in fact improve the dynamics of the sound, so I'm hoping an entirely new cone will really improve things. Ordered some yesterday.
