  • MIDI question about shifting up or down an octave

Hi everyone, I have an old MalletKat Express that I connect to a Yamaha Motif that I use to play xylaphone, marimba etc... It's kind of old and the pedals dont work on it any more so I have no way of shifting up or down an octave when I need to. Does anyone know of a device I can put in line between the MalletKat and the Motif that would allow me to just shift the midi data up an octave when I need to? I seem to remember having an old merge box that would do this but I have no idea where it went, so I am hoping that I can find another similar device that can do this trick. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks.
    TDW-20, SPD-S, HPD-20, PD-80(3), PD-120(2), LaurinDrums 12"snare, PD-105(2), KD-8, FD-7, CY-12RC, CY-6(2), CY-8, CY-12H, PD-7, Zildjian Gen 16 (Hi Hat and Ride), MalletKat Express, Motif6, Roland PM3

I owned (and loved) a Yamaha Motif Rack for many years ... the easiest (and free) way to accomplish what you're describing would simply be to go into whichever instrument you're firing within the Motif and set the octave up by entering note= +12.

You'll find this feature to transpose the note stream within the edit screen (or equivalent name) of the Motif instrument you're playing.

Buying another device to put between your MalletKat and the Motif is just asking for additional configuration and timing lag issues, plus whatever device you spend the $$ for will likely become obsolete next week anyhow ;-)

Thanks for the responses! What I'm looking for is a way to quickly go up or down an octave while I am playing the way I used to be able to before my pedals stopped working so I'm thinking that the Midisolutions device might be the way to go. I am still looking for other solutions that might make it closer to one pedal click to go up and one to go down but the footswitch controller from midisolutions looks interesting.

Ah, if you want to make octave changes "on-the-fly" then my suggestion to edit the Motif instrument is unworkable. Electrodrummer's footswitch solution above would likely be best approach!

Midisolutions - definitely. I use one programmed as a sustain pedal for a sound module I have midi'd to my td30. There is no lag whatsoever.

There are several models. A latching switch, a momentary one, and a continuous controller.
