  • Sound dampening for v drums

HI. I found this forum and hope to get some advice really. I have a TD8-k sitting on a MDS-8C stand with an extra cymbal and Tom and VH-11 Up until recently have been happily playing through my headphones and my neighbour says he can hear me drumming. I'm guessing it's the noise from the kick KD-80. I'm looking at the TDM mats roland do and the new noise isolation (NE) stuff. Out of the TDM 10 or 20 would both fit? Or should I look at the NE-10 plus NE-1 for the kick drum. Or should I look at both? I already have deep pile carpet in the room. Thanks in advance. I love my V drums.

    Welcome to vdrums forum!

You're correct, the noise will be coming from the kick mostly, transmitting through the floor.

You can invest in a NE-10 but you could also build a tennis ball riser just as easily with (you guessed it) tennis balls and a board of wood with holes drilled in it.

That would work for kick and hi-hat.

You could also look at replacing your KD-80 with a Roland KT-10 or outfitting your current pedal with a Triggera Krigg - both would be much quieter kick drum solutions without sacrificing the feel.

many thanks for you're reply. Anyone for tennis ? Luckily I have a good relationship with my neighbour and I am going to call him while playing to see if I can fully establish the actual noise he can hear. Hoping it is just the kick drum and not the whole kit as I can do something about that. Very glad to have found this forum.

Kabonfaiba. Do you know if the Roland KT-10 has the feel of when you hit the drum. Is that what the reverse action trigger mechanism does ?

Sadly I do not know yet. I have a Roland KT-10 on order, but it will take a while to arrive (no stockists in the UK)

It's not cheap - but if anything that's some inclination it's a serious pedal, it weights 3KG and it's a direct drive mechanism with a smooth footboard. Slightly shorter than a Tama Speedcobra (something in-between normal and longboard)

From video footage I could tell the action was authentic kick pedal type; proper pendulum movement - what I determine as quality bearings and balance. Important for heel-toe technique.

The only thing I can't answer is what you want to know; what the beater on pad hit feels like.

I'd say without knowing for certain, best case scenario is that it's similar to hitting a KD-9.

Setting head tension is not possible, so you won't be able to have it rebound as fast as a seriously tightened KD-120. However you would get 2 triggers with 2 pedals (even though they can be wired together - I wouldn't lol) and the cost is favourable once you consider how expensive getting a direct drive double pedal is, and the amount of floor space you save.

            Thanks.

When you get yours it would be good to hear your experiences. It does look like a viable option.

I could use it at night and use my KD-80 during the day.

I have purchased a NE-10 with 2 x NE-1 for my KD-80 and a TDM-10 mat for the whole kit. Hoping it works.

              An expensive purchase lol.

                Ok.

                I have got a Roland NE-10 and 2 NE-1's for my KD-80. Also got a TDM-10 mat.

Have set everything up and no vibration to the walls anymore. The NE-10 works better if not on a deep pile carpet so got the TDM-10 to give a better surface.

Finally I have used so medical gauze padding taped to the front of the beater to soften the blows a bit.

I know felt beaters can destroy the mesh by friction so hoping this might be a better method.

Now thinking about getting a KT-10 for late night practice.

Looks really smart! Thanks for sharing.

P.S. Looks like I won't be getting my KT-10 order till mid / late September.

I found one KT-10 in stock and bought it. They said delivery for Tuesday. I hope that is correct as I looked everywhere online and everyone was out of stock and said earliest was end of September. They said it was in their warehouse. I'm just waiting for tracking information so I can believe it's true.

Well I literally asked every shop in the UK and requested my local music shop to order them, but no luck. Even Thomann in Germany said not till September. Unless you have a local shop whose not listing them online, I don't know how you found one in stock.
Either way, please do tell what you think of it when you get it.

I have just received a tracking number from ups so it looks like the KT-10 is enough route. I will let you know on Tuesday what it's like.

Excellent! I'm looking forward to your views.

To date, I'm finding most users seem to be rating it average to very good, with most complaints about the noise weirdly (Is it quieter than a KD-9 or not lol. Who cares... It's quieter than an acoustic!) what matters more to me is; footboard lightness, feel, speed? can it go metal fast? - the proverbial ceiling of it's capability if you practiced everyday.
