  • The Official Superior Drummer Presets Thread

Breaking off from another thread.. a few of us were thinking a thread to keep all SD 2.0 presets would be a good idea so we can share our presets. So here it is. I am just starting out so have yet to create one. But the rest of ye willing to share.. Post them here.

If possible with a sound sample of how the presets sound.

Moderators.. any chance of making this a sticky?

Here are a few - most of mine are difficult to share because I use separate instances of S2.2 in Logic along with a bunch of plugins to give me more control over the split between cymbals and drums - but here are some standalone S2.2...

        1. Phil Collins "I Don't Care Anymore" preset (metal foundry):
        http://scotthaskitt.com/care_anymore_HI.s20
Youtube cover using this preset... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnosP...e=channel_page

        2. Here's a "Sad But True" Metallica preset:
        http://scotthaskitt.com/SAD_BUT_TRUE.s20

        Kits Used:

Metal Foundry (whole kit - mostly close mics on drums)
Allaire (tom ambients, snare ambients and close mics)
        Hit Factory (snare ambients)
Evil Drums (snare ambs and close)
Music City (snare ambs and close)

I recorded a short version with guitars and bass to give some reference:

        drums only: http://scotthaskitt.com/sad_but_true_KIT.wav

Nice job. The kit for "Dont care" sounds like it rocks. Nice job on the drumming too.

            Scott -
Your Tool medley was SICK!!! Danny Carey (sp?) is one of my absolute favorite "metal" drummers (though I personally think their music is way beyond being classified as metal) and I'm jealous/awestruck/thrilled to see it played so well.
I think your vid mentioned something about using an SDX expansion pack for this set...is that correct? If I wanted to get that sound would I need that exp. pack? Getting that snare sound of his is something I'd love to do!
Stick twirling - because you obviously have mastered all other aspects of drumming already, right?

I think you need to post that Tool preset mate, it's veeeeery close to the real thing 'Pillars' is a beautiful song too btw, I sure hope you're getting out and performing stuff like that for the public. It's on par with Andy McKee's stuff.

I'm interested in hearing more about the split instances of SD?
Does that mean you have 2 different outputs to 2 instances of SD from the one midi track? one for cymbals one for drums? If so.. how?

Thanks, man. Although I agree that his playing is nothing short of amazing, I think Danny Carey's real genius is in his ability to write such intricate yet "catchy" drum parts. So musical. His short little solo breaks get stuck in your head and just beg to be learned!

I'll post the preset here - I've been terrible about responding to youtubers who have requested it. I should just post it on the video, but here it is - http://scotthaskitt.com/tool_barresi.s20 - I don't have my SDX hard drive with me and I can't remember which libraries I used. I did use the Evil Drums SDX for most of that preset, but I think I actually used Avatar for the snare - the Evil Drums pack doesn't have snares off, I think. Anyhow, give it a try and see what comes up. I'll post later (probably tomorrow morning) regarding what was actually used throughout that preset.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm performing those songs with some great musicians lately, but I'm still having some loop pedal stage fright, to be honest. It's a goal for this coming year to do at least one solo show solo with it. There's so much to remember and set up for it!

I posted the preset in the above quote to dschrammie.

Basically, I just copy the midi file/region to two tracks in Logic, each track with it's own instance of SD. Then I unload (select none) all drum positions in one, and unload all cymbal positions in the other. I find that putting a gate on some of the ambient channels really adds some excitement to the drum sound. Of course, gating cymbals is just an awful sound, so I leave those mics open on the cymbals.

That way, I don't have to mess with the midi track at all. The drum hits don't trigger anything on the cymbal channel, and the cymbals don't do anything on the drum channel.

I'll often have 1 or 2 extra channels just using the ambient mics from allaire (or music city) from a similar timbre drum that is in the original.

I haven't done a "real mix" with my own music using this method, but when I do, I'll do the same thing but bounce the SD tracks to separate mics, which will give me further control.

Thanks! Those small toms in the metal foundry are like gold. So fun.

                    Jazz Kit

Ok, here is my Jazz kit. This is for those that dont have the formal Jazz SDX! Anyway it is the default Sonor custom 2 kit with some higer tuning to give it a jazz feel. The mix was very dry but I believe the mix in this file has some amb mics turned up. Its a rough draft but I wanted to add to this unofficial sticky to drive more interest and more posts!

                    Its all based on Foundry.

Uh...what was that middle part again?
I have no idea what you guys are talking about...admittedly, I have only been dinking around with S2 for a couple of months and most of that has just been figuring out how to get Megadrum to trigger it properly...so I haven't had a chance to make any attempt at getting into what I can do with S2. But I'm guessing that even after I do get into it, I'm still going to be boggled by whatever you guys are talking about (I ain't all that smart!). Yeah...I'm gonna need you to go ahead and make a tutorial video of whatever it is you just said.

(actually, though I wouldn't ever expect you to, that would be cool if you did, 'cause it sounds like S2 is capable of way more than I'm aware of!)

I don't really do this stuff real time... it's all post-production when I'm recording songs and working on the mix. I keep things pretty simple when I'm playing real-time. I find that what sounds good in a mix is rarely what motivates me or sounds natural in my headphones when I'm playing on the kit.

It's actually a much more elusive thing for me; finding a kit that I really like playing when I'm at the kit. It's changed every now and then, but I think the ridiculous amount of options have actually made it difficult!

                              Matt Cameron - Backspacer

Here is a kit that I've been wanting to make ever since I heard the Backspacer album. I thinkthe drums on that album can suite a few styles of music.

I only used Platinum Evil Drums:

                              http://www.rockdebris.com/audio/samp...ceOfNature.zip

I recorded my own version of a tune from Backspacer for a mix check (the simplest one ):

                              http://www.rockdebris.com/audio/samp...ceOfNature.mp3

Mapping wise, I use only TMC-6s, but I tried to follow what I can remember of other Roland module standards. When playing this kit in SOLO, I just use the default controller option. I'm using a VH-11 through a TMC-6 and the MIDI config I have in this project works well for me, though you might find it a bit weird. I'm sure you can load your own MIDI as a combined preset if its not working out for you.
