  • TD9 and S2.0

I finally got my copy of S2 today and after spending a couple of hours installing it I now have the expected teething problems! I'm using it with my standard TD9 kit and I'm using a Novation X-Station as my midi I/O and soundcard.
Firstly, the hi hat is not exactly smooth and I seem to get a lot of double hit's.
Secondly, there seems to be quite a bit of latency from the kit. Played from the keyboard on the x-station it seems to be pretty much zero but it's noticable from the kit. I've set the latency on the soundcard to 1ms and the buffer to 64 on S2 - is this the best I'm going to get?
Lastly, how do I go about getting the rimshots on the toms etc? at the moment I've got the normal tom sound coming off 2 of them and a crash off the other!?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm very much new to vdrums and software.
    Cheers!

I can't help with the latency issue, unfortunately thats pretty much something that must be worked out on an individual trial & error basis.

Any strike zone can be applied to any available sound by using the instrument learn feature. The Instrument box is in the lower right corner of S2.0. Once you have constructed your kit to include all the instruments/sounds that you intend to use, select the instrument from the drop-down menu, and click the 'learn' button - then strike the pad you wish to assign to that sound. The articulation drop-down menu is used to assign additional sounds relating to any specific instrument. For instance, click on Tom1 and choose rimshot from the articulation menu. Click 'learn' and strike the rim of Tom1. Playing around with the available selection options will give you a really good understanding how things work. For some real fun, check out the articulation options for 'hats'...

Thanks Sabre! I'll have a play around following your instructions and see how I get on

Not sure what I can do about the latency issue as I've set the lowest settings I can - could the power of the computer have something to do with?

        Cheers!

Like I said, latency is a tricky thing to resolve.

Personally, I've never had to change any settings with regard to latency or buffers, and I just use my PC's onboard Realtek ALC883 audio with an M-Audio Uno USB MIDI interface. Onboard audio is supposed to be the biggest offender when it comes to latency issues, but that is definately not the case for me...

Just a quick story on soundcards and latency: A friend of mine has a Razer Barracuda AC-1 that he let me try. I know gaming cards aren't particularly suitable replacements for a good audio interface either, but I figured it's got a dedicated and powerful audio processor, so it should be as good if not better than my onboard audio... right? Wrong. No matter what I tried, it introduced horrible sound lag, and after 2 days with it, I couldn't wait to get it out of my system.

I don't know anything about the X-Station, but it looks like something that has everything you need for what you're trying to do. Perhaps someone else has tried a similar configuration and will come along to provide some insight.

I don't know anything about those sound cards, but I have got great results with the Presonus firestudio project. I would imagine that even the cheapest presonus card would work fine and have great audio quality for the price. I also found that the echo audio cards worked well.

I've sorted out the mapping of the various drums but tried the articulation options for the hats which proved a bit of a nightmare! I'm not really sure how they all work with so many options and how you actually map them out. Can anyone enlighten me please?
              Cheers.

I'm also having troubles with the hihats. I even tried to go to the Toontracks forum that had the mapping info that was recommended .I went through the steps and still no luck. I ordered a Vh-12 I hope this will help(TDW-20).

I tried to save the midi set up on some of the other kits from different libraries and that doesn't work. There were some better than others.

But, I am dissapointed in the hihats. Also can't seem to get the chokes to work.

I wish there was better support for this stuff from Toontracks.

They made the nir-z look so inviting. It doesn't seem to work as well as what they did. Why does it seem to be such a fuss to get these things up and running? I can't wait till the future? Till' then I might be back to micing up a kit! I sold it! Damn!

Grandaddy knows how to do this. Look for a post of his here or on the Toontrack forum.

OK, I've tried to map out the FD8 on my TD9 as per previous posts (although they did specify VH11) but I'm still having problems; firstly I can't seem to get a closed edge sound on the hats like I can with the TD9 module itself - is this just not possible with Superior? Also when I do hit the edge of the pad with hats 'closed' I often get what sounds like a double hit!? Can anybody help on this? Pleeeeessssse. This is driving me nuts!

                    I'm starting to wish I'd bought BFD2!!
