  • Finally - VIDEO of live Superior 2.0 playing with a band

EDIT: Vimeo video link: http://vimeo.com/2163350 <--- much better quality than Youtube

I finally broke out the camcorder and recorded us doing a pass of a Lincoln Brewster song (just instrumental) in my living room last night.

    Here's the Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfS2EI0GTe0&fmt=18

The main guitar track, bass, and drums were recorded live. Then he put an additional guitar track after that. The guitar is going direct into my Firebox and I'm using AmpliTube 2 on it in Ableton Live. The bass is also going direct into the Firebox and I'm using Ampeg on it. Obviously the drums are triggering Superior Drummer 2.0.

Definitely watch it in "high quality" mode. I actually took the time to deinterlace the video before syncing it with the audio and saving it. The mix isn't that good and it's real quick just to get the video out. I actual used one of the built-in mastering effects on the Master out channel (called "analog warmth" I think). That seemed to make it a bit more punchy and less digital recording sounding. But my ears aren't good for mixing.

Great job ... the mix is fine. Compared to other videos on YouTube, this is great stuff. Things can always be better -- that's the way it is with everything, I suppose.

Anyway, you play great, the sound is good, the band grooves. I love it.
Ask not whether something is useful -- ask what it is useful for.

Roland TD-12, Iron Cobra hihat stand and bass-drum pedal from TAMA. My accoustic kit is a Yamaha Power-V Birch with Paiste Alpha-series splashes, crashes, and hihat. My ride is a Zildjan Ping Ride, 20" I think.

Check out my TD-12 on Youtube. My page is here http://www.youtube.com/HerlPearl.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I can share the project file for that kit later on tonight.

I edited my original post to include a Vimeo.com link for that video. Much better quality than Youtube, IMO.

Cool vid, thanks! And yeah, I can hear the wide stereo panning in the Vimeo version vs. the "High Quality" version on YouTube. Look forward to checking out your .s20 file as well.

Realizing this is an e-drum forum I'm curious what the guitar and bass player think of all of this e-instrument stuff, the drums included. I personally LOVE Amplitube and Ampeg SVX. Much like the drum VSTi it's just awesome that you can get a bazillion sounds available.

I'm more curious in the setup you 3 are using with the headphones? What are the guitars plugged into and you etc...

Not familiar with the song, but sounded pretty good to me.
Good mix, but I have to ask...

Should the bass guitar sound like that?
                  Is it deliberately distorted?

                        Thanks everyone.

Gastric - Yeah, the guitarist & bassist were definitely loving the AmpliTube and Ampeg sounds. If we'd had more time that night, I'm sure we would've spent more time selecting and tweaking the presets. But they're loving how many options VST instruments offer to us with such limited equipment and money. It's awesome!

hodsmack4 - It's a Behringer (sp?) AMP800 cheapy 4-channel headphone mixer. I run a stereo out from the PreSonus Firebox to one of the inputs on the AMP800 and then we all just plugin to it. Since the guitars/bass are direct and the drum sounds are (obviously) coming from the PC, then it makes headphone rehearsals possible. Love it!

S-E-A - Yeah, listening back to the uploaded versions (and not the original file on my computer)...the bass does sound kinda distorted and harsh. When I was "mixing" the track (and I use that term loosely) it sounded better. I think it did anyway. It was late

I still am having kind of a hard time with the open/close action on the hi-hat. I'm using the built-in controller from those VH-12 hats with the Trigger IO. Not sure what else to tweak to get it to respond more naturally.

For your next video you should include a room mic. That way you can have part of the video showing what you guys look like to someone in the room without headphones on to hear the actual music. Would really show the power of the virtual instruments via headphones.

For Amplitube stuff you can visit http://www.guitarampmodeling.com/ for tons of user presets, info on using impulses (cabinet modeling which often sounds better), etc. Much like this e-drum forum but for guitar sims. Good stuff there.

For your hihat dissatisfaction why not post a detailed thread in the DIY section with videos explaining your problems? Then we can all review and make some suggestions to see if we can bang out a reasonable solution? I'm going to guess it's all about the Trigger IO and the fact S2 has no real tweaks with the open/closed point in the CC4 data (like BFD2 does). But without some specifics I'm just guessing.

vimeo quality is amazing for a compressed file,
to me the mix sounds very good, your kit blends well
with the music, as does your playing..
