  • Ocean Way Drums - Price

    Hi,

I'm on the lookout for the best price for Ocean Way Drums. Maybe others on the forum are as well.

I spotted OWD Gold for sale today for $619 at http://www.catacan.com/p1567/SR-Ocea...duct_info.html

This is appealing because I can drive to their location (if they allow walk-ins) and maybe save on shipping.

I'd very much like to try OWD, but the price and lack of kit details and cymbals is holding me up.

Please post here if you see lower pricing.

    Thanks,

    Alex (Homer)

    Hi Alex,

Did you take a look at the gearslutz thread I pointed you to in the other thread? In any case, the one cymbal thing is going to change. They are adding a splash, China, and another crash if I'm not mistaken. Now exactly when that will be is anyone's guess.

That's a fantastic price. Wonder if they ship to the States? For people that balk at the price, I should point out that by the time you've bought BFD or S2 and added a few expansion packs - which nearly everybody does - you're spending the same amount or more. Right off the bat OWD gives you 19 distinct kits. and as I've said earlier, you can mix and match kit pieces. They are however, still being cryptic about the drums used.

    Cheers.

I was gonna say, that's a hefty price for that damnnnn. But 19 kits?!? That's insane. Personally I'd like some more Zildjian cymbals used, there's hardly anything I can find from them. Like A customs, K customs, some of the K hybrid's, the ZIL BEL (most important thing for me considering I'm a metal drummer and use it for a ton of accents), and some good china's. Unless someone knows a pack that has these already?

        Hi Steve,

Yes, I read the whole thing through. Thanks again for that. Good point about the cost of BFD2/S2 plus expansion packs. I'm really tempted to buy this.

        Thanks,

        Alex (Homer)

The official PR from OWD says 32 velocity layers. As long as I can get a tight ppp roll on the snare, I don't really care about the number of velocity layers. I can do that now with Addictive Drums (2GB), so I'm pretty sure I can with 40GB worth of content (OWD).

            Cheers.

I strongly recomend taking a look at the Platinum packs... I have BFD2 and to be sincere rarely use its sounds after getting Andy Johns and Joe Barresi. Andy Johns has a great selection of snares/cymbals (I know you mentioned Zild but the Paiste Rudes on Andy Johns sound damn good for rock).

I am still waiting for further information/developments on Ocean Way due to their mentioned release on Neil Peart´s kit samples....

                Pim,

I agree that the Platinum Samples stuff sounds great, but I'm still having functionality problems with BFD2. I'm not willing to invest in more content until some of these problems are ironed-out.

I think the Neil Peart kit will be a SONIC REALITY product, but don't think it will be Ocean Way Drums.

                Cheers.

If Neil's kit were added to Ocean Way Drums, I'd buy it in a drumbeat , but since the other kits are "no-name", it would make sense that it will likely be a Sonic Reality product. I just wish I knew when it will be available.

FYI, I've since found out that the OWD price quoted at catacan was a mistake.

$895 USD is the lowest price I can find.

                    Cheers.

Dohhhh! is right - I was ready to snap that up. I'm still interested though, just have to wait a bit.

                        Cheers.

Yes, I guess I'll have to wait. Lot's of D'ohhhh lately, actually. I'm having a bit of a bad luck streak that's eating at my wallet. I scraped the front right corner of my car on a concrete post in an underground parking garage about three weeks ago, and earlier this week I tripped on the stairs at MarineLand in Niagara Falls and smacked my video camera into the concrete. The cost of repairing both (or replacing the camera) would more than cover OWD, S2, Mixosaurus, and some Platinum Samples stuff, too.

                          Hopefully I won't have a drumkit-related injury

Yikes!! That's some tough luck there Alex Hopefully you get that sorted so you can get back into spending on something more inspiring!

One question I have about the OWD sounds is their RAM usage or disk streaming intensity with larger kits. One of the things I like about Toontrack S2 is the lossless compression they use for their samples. From what I can gather (I may be wrong here) the S2 samples are still compressed when loaded into RAM which means larger kits can be accommodated without performance issues. I can load enough samples from S2 with full bleed and ambience mics to cover my entire kit without performance problems.
I love the OWD samples but I'm a little unsure how well they would integrate with a large kit.

Man, you need to just stay inside and play the drums for a while.

OWD uses the Kontakt Player 2 which uses direct-from-disk streaming, so it really should be fine if it's on its own 7200 rpm (at least) drive. The Platinum edition already is.

                              Cheers.
