  • Who Wins?

Now that Superior 2.0 is out and several people have it, which product is the one to own and why?

We all win with such nice options.

I have both .. love them both... why?

    BFD2
Nice sounds - but for my taste totally overshadowed by Platinum Samples Packs. I got both Andy Johns/Evil Drums and they in plain french kick **s. Andy Johns has a selection of Ludwig snares that sound beautiful...the Paiste 2002 and Rudes .. sound killer. Joe Barresi has Tama Copeland snare and nice Zildjan Ks.....
I like as well the way you can control CC for the hi-hat in their engine: you can tweak when to start triggering closed/1/4.. 1/2 .. sounds and it is a nice touch (same as available for BFD 1.5).

Its great plus in comparison to the competitor is variety: I got Jazz and Funk and Deluxe Packs as well .. man do they sound good.

Had my crash issues with Tracktion 3 .. cymbals cutting .. I am trying now Ableton Live 7 (demo version) and it has been working as a charm .. no clicks .. cuts .. pops ... really nice..

    Superior

Nice hi-hat performance - although without the same tweakability (that I am aware of) as BFD2's engine. Really estable right out of the box with Tracktion 3 .. it was crash proof.. easy to install the TPC really reduced RAM footprint. DFHS sounds within it ... are nice as well. Although it takes more of my time to get the more polished sound I am after at this moment (really loved the rawness at first...) . I really look forward to their next pack that seems to have much more interesting drums recorded....

I can't comment on the others but I have to say I am LOVING S2. It works well out of the box but with a few simple tweaks it becomes much more dynamic. The room mics are awesome and the stereo image of the entire kit is something no modelling or plug in emulation is likely to achieve any time soon.
I am looking forward to future S2 packs with more instruments (percussion in particular) but the NY Avatar pack included with S2 has some wonderful kit sounds.

        SuperPuss,

So,how do you like it compaired to using your TD-20 now?
Will you be using the sampling(Sup.2.0etc..)for sounds now
or are you still content with the 20? I really wish that I didn't have to learn
the midi mapping to get the Hi-hats right.I still haven't gotten them right.
I don't think they quite have it ready "out of the box".
This to me needs addressed.I know I shouldn't complain as we are
getting spoiled I'm sure. But,this to me seems to be something of an easy fix for them?. I just like how I can get going pretty quick with the TD-20 on it's own
I wish it was that kind of experience with these software companies.
I'm hoping the TDW-20 will be a good enough solution 'cos I'm
kind of unhappy so far with the sampling thing. The sounds are great but, I'm not totally sold on the playabuility. Personally, if I had the time I'd use acoustic sets(which I'm used to).Maybe with time an figuring it out but, what a pain in the ying yang.I want to make music not be a programmer.

Have you updated to 2.01 yet? This fixed the hihat playability issue.
It is actually a fairly simple process to get the hihat dialled in with the 2.01 update using the learn function. Check out the Superior 2 thread HERE for the full details of doing this. Seriously, it only takes a couple of minutes.

As for my TD20 and TD12 sounds, I will most likely use them for extra percussive instruments. In fact, I have layered a pitched down cymbal in S2 with the gong sound from my TD12 to produce a much better gong sound.
I now run two extra stereo inputs in Protools for my TD12 and TD20 'extra' sounds alongside the S2 plugin. The trick is going to be creating the ambience around the Roland sounds and making it 'sit' with the S2 sounds in a realistic manner.

I have another idea for live shows too. My live shows will be performed in multichannel surround sound with a custom built PA and I will most likely mix S2 sounds with module sounds to create some cool surround effects

So, in summary, I will most likely be using both Roland sounds and S2 sounds with S2 being the 'core' of my kit and the Roland sounds being effects and percussion. The exception will be songs where I want electronic sounds. In that case, the Roland sounds will be the core of my kit.
All this stuff just gives me flexibility to create pretty much anything I want
