Superior Drummer 2 and Reaper

I just dove into the world of VST's. My reason is to record each drum on a separate track with my TD15.

I bought Superior Drummer 2.4 and started running it thru Toontrack Solo. So far it's awesome.
So simple, I just loaded SD2 onto my HP pc, Plugged my TD15 directly into a USB slot. Selected ASIO/TD15 Drivers.
Within 2 minutes everything was perfect. No latency issue, all drums mapped the way I wanted(didn't have to do
much)everything was mapped right where it should be. Had to make one setting change for CC on hi hats. They
Play great(before buying this I was worried about the Hi Hats, but not anymore) So I have it working great.

I downloaded Reaper(full trial version for 2 months) Reaper can see my TD15 and I can record the internal
sounds no problem.(all drums on one Track of course) I can't find where I would get Superior to load. I've watched
a ton of youtube vids and when I go to the VST/VSTi section, SD2 isn't showing up in the list. All the tutorials say
that SD(or any VST software) should just be recognized.

Between learning SD2 and Reaper at the same time, Im probably missing some important early steps. Can anyone give me some
pointers on using SD2 with Reaper?

I think I've read everything and watched everything, pretty sure I even know how to map each drum to an individual track if I can just get Reaper to recognize SD.

Any help is appreciated.

You need to make sure you installed the vst version of Superior Drummer...and, you need to remember what folder the "dll" file that Reaper looks for is in...

After you get that done, open Reaper, go to "Options", then "Preferences", then scroll down in the preferences menu & find "VST", click "Add" & add the folder you installed the SD vst plug-in into, hit "clear cache & re-scan", then Superior should show up...

I'll check the folders and .dlls when I get home. As for the VST version. When I put in Disk 1, clicked the exe file for 64 bit it just took off, and I just kept putting in the next disc when it asked. I don't remember there being an option for VST version. I could definitely have missed it tho. I know I loaded all five discs. then I went to Toontracks website, registered and did all the updates.

Minerman, that worked. Thank you so much.

Got them mapped and recording on separate tracks. I'm like 95% there. The only issue I'm having now is the hi hat seems to have lost some functionality. It plays pretty good, but not as awesome as it does in toontrack solo. I'm still working on it, but if anyone knows how to get the full functionality of the hats in reaper. Or more importantly, if I can't get full functionality at least then I'll know and stop wasting time. I also wouldn't purchase reaper. I'll move on to like cubase or something else that may work. Havnt gottent that far yet. From everything I'm reading I should be able to get them right. Minerman, Thanks again.

On the mapping window, above the keyboard, click on the Preset tab, in there, you can adjust the way SD handles the HH pedal. Try a few settings.

Now if I can just get everything to save so I dont have to set up everytime I'll be very happy. I havnt really dug into saving everything. One good thing about that is I can get the whole thing set up in a minute. the repetitiveness is helping me learn this better. But I will figure out how to save it.

When you get all your tracks set up, sounding/playing how you like 'em, select them all, then right click & "Save as track template"...name it whatever you want, then you can insert all those tracks, exactly how you had them set up, with one or two mouse clicks...

I've got all kinds of stuff like that saved in Reaper, not just for my e-drums, guitar re-amping templates, bass guitar chains, all kinds...Reaper is the best daw I've ever used, period...I even went back to try Cubase 5 a month or so ago, & turned right around, & un-installed it again, Reaper to me, is the easiest to use, far cheaper, & you can customize it for you....

Figured out how to save my kits and settings. And create Track templates in Reaper(thanks for the tip Minerman.) I'm using Roots Sticks and there's no ride mic. Not sure if that's just the way it is. I have a few questions....

Do you know if I can add a ride mic instead of relying on the overheads?

Is there a way to arm all tracks at once? Or do you have to select each one every time you record?

Not sure on the ride mic, I do know a lot of my Toontrack drums don't have a seperate mic for the ride, but you can adjust the ride's volume in the "Construct" page, and in the "Mixer" page you can adjust how much the ride goes through each channel (IE: Oh's, AMB, etc)....

If you're talking about recording the output of the multi-out drums (kick, snare, etc), just select the first track you want to arm, then hold shift & select the last track....That will select all the tracks, then hit the arm button, & be sure to enable the monitoring on the tracks too, or you won't be able to hear 'em...

Yep, that'll work. I was looking at it the wrong way. I was thinking there should be a master 'ARM' button that arms all tracks, since Im only recording my own drum tracks(then I will send them to my guitarist and keyboard player who use Logic and Pro Tools). I couldn't understand why someone wouldn't want that feature. I was forgetting that you could also record Guitar, Bass, Keys, and Vocals and use just Reaper only. I think my guitarist who uses an older version of Pro Tools may jump to Reaper and try it out. The Keyboard player using Logic won't even entertain the idea. lol.

Figured I'd piggy back on this thread... I can't get the MIDI to trigger the VST version of SD in Reaper... But I am a total newb with this. I only used Toontrack Solo before.

1) I have the VST directory specified in Preferences. I can see the VST and add it to Reaper. A FX window pops up with SD in it.
2) I think I added the MIDI Device in Preferences as well under MIDI Inputs.

So - what do I do now? I have the FX enabled, shows green. How do I map the MIDI to the SD drums? When I hit a drum, no sound is triggered. When I click on a drum in the window, I do hear it, but there is a large latency that I did not hear with Solo.

So then I have two basic issues: Triggering SD sounds within Reaper, and Latency. Help! I am going nuts reading the huge manual.

Sounds like you need to set up reapers midi input. I'm still new at this. I set mine up a month ago, and now I just open up reaper and my kit is all set up the way I like it so I havnt done this since pretty much day one( or maybe like day 5) lol. I don't have it in front of me but, got to options, preferences. And under devices, set input to your interface. I have a td15 which is the interface so I don't know what you're going to see. This should give you sound.

I was able to use ASIO drivers and the td15 drivers. I started with no latency, but I think you need to find ASIO settings, and play with that. I know these are in the option, preferences area.

Hopefully I'm not messing you up. I'm loving SD2. I'll look at mine tomorrow and see if I can find the exact names.
