TDW-20 Owners: Important Note about "importing" TD-20 expansions & backups!

Please read pages 10-12 and 40 of your new TDW manual very carefully. If you are experiencing trouble "loading" your current expansions, it is because you are not "importing" them first.

Remember, TD0 files go INSIDE the TD folder - not beside it.

This document will walk you through the importing process with TDW. This is step by step directly from your Roland manual(s). (since I get at least 1-2 emails a week asking how because people won't read their manuals )

Keep in mind that VDrumLib will do all this right at the computer. Then, you can load as normal at the module.

Also included are general loading instructions for all other modules.

So I have about 200 or so kits for you. (This is one of the reasons I purchased the TDW-20) I have not brought each of of these into the TD-20. Are you saying I need to do this before I install the TDW? Please let me know. It would take for every to bring in each and every kit! I am getting ready to do this today. I look forward to your response.

I have edited the OP to include our new general instruction guide.

Regarding your question Ken, no - you do not need to do this before installing the TDW. Importing covers the entire backup, not individual kits. Follow the instructions in the guide above.

Hey Ken,

If I remember correctly, you are also a VDrumLib user. So, just download the latest version of VDL from my website and you can ignore the whole import function altogether.

Just change the VDL module type to "TD-20EXP". VDL will automatically recognize your old non-expanded kits even though they haven't been imported. So, you can mix non-expanded kits with expanded kits on the same backup without ever having to import any of the non-expanded backups.

Good point Ken. I need to add to the guide that VDL will do all this without sitting at the module going through all the steps. I always assume not many TD-20 users use VDL, but that's just dumb of me.

Good catch. Thanks for the info. I am a VDL user. Just makes it easier to bring the kits to a card instead of doing a MIDI dump.

I was able to get some of the kits coverted using the following method.

1) BACKED UP the Post TDW-20 kits, just in case.

2) Did an import and picked the Orig TD-20.

3) Once it was imported to 51-100, I did a save and it was coverted to the TDW format. I also named it such but I dont know if I really need to do that. I guess once everything is coverted, I will be able to get rid of the original kits off the CF card.

Yes, this is a simplified 10,000 foot level overview. All in all a great experience. Thanks to Alan and SD for the support! I look forward to picking up more kits now from V-Ex since I will be able to use them all off of one CF card.

No. The new version will automatically recognize your current registration.

Not sure what you mean by this. But, I hope that you do know that you don't need to use MIDI with VDL. VDL can read and write the .td0 files that you transfer via a CF card.

For starters- THANK YOU for this post. Thankfully, it caught my attn. prior to finally pulling the trigger on buying the TDW.

ALSO thank you for vdrumlib and MENTIONING it works with the CF. I had no idea - WOW what a timesaver. Why Roland doesn't buy this outright and then include it in every kit is beyond me. Best $20 I've spent in some time.

Question, Didnt find other thread better fit

I want to gain positional sensativity on the head of a tom or two like the snare by editing snare sounds. To gain another input that has head positional location, can this be done with an AUX? or even a Tom input? I'm using a TD-20S brain, but also have a 6 input add on Roland MIDI trigger unit.

In general, does anything besides the snare trigger input have head positional readings that can be used when a snare sounds is edited?

I could not find another thread that would better match my issues to be seen.
