  • My TD9 Chad Smith sound - Critique and suggestions please

I just bought and downloaded the Vex Hodge Podge pack for my TD9 and while going through them I had in mind a Chad Smith sound I wanted.

I decided why not try and make my own, so by repeating the intro to Blood Sugar Sex Magic I think Ive come up with quite a reasonable copy.

    Bass: 002 Custom K - Head Tuning -29, Muffling Tape 1
    Snare: 058 Custom S - Head Tuning +11, Muffling Tape 1
Hi Hat: 265 Dark HH - Cymbal Size 13"
    Splash: 314 10" MediumSpE - Cymbal Size 8"

Ambience type: Bath, Size: Medium, Wall: Wood

Thats about all I have so far, Im new to this so its taking a while. Im also having a hard time finding a good crash sound for this. Ive not even looked at the toms yet!

This patch works well with most of the BSSM album, and increase the ambience and it sounds great with Stadium Arcadium stuff too. Might want to drop the bass drum tuning a touch for that though.

If anyone has any suggestions or improvements for this Id be glad to hear em.

Let me know what you think

Gah! I knew someone would ask for that. I suck and its embarrassing

I havent gotten around to finding a site to host sound files, so for now I have to whack everything on www.myspace.com/fleasbass Its self-explanatory "TD9 Test" etc.

Hearing it back on speakers I realise I need to fiddle with the ambience and the snare its not quite perfect, but Im getting close I reckon...

I listened to your myspacem, its pretty good.
BTW, in Dani California, Smith does'nt kick triplets in the verse. only two hits. its gonna make it easier on you.

Ahh, that old chestnut. When I first learned it I thought he was just playing the straight "Sweet Home Alabama" thing in the verses, but Ive listened over and over again and watched him doing it live on YouTube etc. and Im pretty certain he is playing the 3. And if I wasnt convinced before, its charted like that in Rock Band too, and they have the master tracks to work it from.

Having said that its so hard to hear you might as well play it straight and noone would hear the diffrence! But its taken me so long to be able to play it Im gonna use it!
