  • TD9 Expansion: The TOOLBOX Now Available!

Edit: This expansion is now available at the V Expressions LTD website.

New TD9 V Expressions LTD Pack: The Toolbox:

Every drummer needs their own toolbox of sounds and accessories. Whether you are giggin live, recording on stage, recording in the studio, jamming in the basement, or practicing in the band rehearsal room, you need the right sounds to get the job done. This XP pack for the TD9 provides 31 such kits.

Kit # 31 ( named: User Kit VExpressionsltd) is one of the kits I've created for you to expand on and for a default reference kit, the rest of the kits 32-50 are the Roland factory User Kit. You will hear a staggering difference between the VEX kit and the Factory kit. For all experience levels and functionality, this pack will deliver a great enhancement to the TD9. Based on a standard set-up including crash two as a crash/splash/or china cymbal and aux 1 programmed as Tom 4, all the kits will be uniform in level and panning. For those who have their Aux channel as a cymbal, I’ve included another backup file that features a crash/china programmed for you. All toms have the rim trigger programmed as the acoustic rim sound, with the exception of a few that feature percussion. Great for gigging and recording, you'll be able to use these kits a reference point to create your personal masterpieces. We have programmed some great environments these kits are placed in.

Just tried it: it sounds great!! The factory kits sounds dull and flat compared to the VEX kits. Just try the Gated kit for one of your favourite rock songs. It's a blast!

Also the cowbell sound on the rim of tom 2 is (simpel but) great. For who needs rim shots of all the toms. But we all need...more cowbell!

After playing with it for two days I'm still excited about the new sounds which every VEX pack brings. 'The Toolbox' is a good name for the kits: compared to the Hodge Podge they differ more and can be used for more styles of music, the Hodge Podge kits are more alike.

The be honest: I've only used a few of the factory kits since I got the VEX packs. Roland really should hire you to improve the factory kits!

I just bought the toolbox expansion and I'm very pleased with the sounds you managed to get out of the module. I really think Roland is supplying some mediocre presets and it amazes me they don't seem to care about that.

Anyway, I do have one question. Could it be that some of the crash1 sounds are a bit low in volume? When I'm doing some loud stuff (with the metal kit, for example, which is kit 3 I believe?) the crash is kind of an anti-climax when you've just completed a full roll on the toms, in that it is too soft. I have already turned it up a bit, but I was just wondering if anyone else feels the same way or that I just have a weird perception of volume?

r3t, have you verified that your pad choice (for your personal setup) is correct in the module? This is the first thing that must be done/checked. I have emailed Chris to view your question/concern also in case their is indeed an issue to be addressed.

                    Crash 1 volumes

I believe crash 1 volumes should be between 78 and 82 for most of the kits. They should not be 70-76. I did make a correction in beta testing on Crash 1. If everyone is getting the crash volumes at 74 or so - then the file you are using is not the updated version. I need to know this, can someone verify for me?

To change the volume globally for all the instruments in the pack, the easiest way is to up your trigger sens #. A few #'s higher will make the world of difference. You may have the need to set it higher than others will.

Again, Let me know if you guys are all getting the files with the 78-82 volume range for crash 1...

Also, as Alan mentioned, pad selection is key to getting the proper volume and operation.

Take care, and thanks for your support.

                    Chris

                      Hi Chris,

I just checked and the volumes for crash 1 are in the 78-82 range.

I checked the volumes and they were correct. However, I use a Yamaha PCY130s as my crash1 pad, and this caused a small decrease in sensitivity compared to the default trigger type (CY8). I upped the sensitivity a bit and all seems fine now. Thanks!

Love the sound of the 'Mild' kit...sounds like a Dave Weckl kit!! Definitely gonna download! Being a ludite it may take some time.

just got this as a gift today, only could give it a quick try out but the metal kits rock! And I see that you broke down and included COWBELLS on some (well, at least one) of the kits! COWBELL COWBELL COWBE, er, sorry...

but a brilliant package, thanks chris and alan!

(I am having a problem uploading stuff to the module, but will post a question on the vex forums....)
