I put play sand in my rack tubes.

Even though my snare is separate and two of the three cymbals are separate, I did it anyway.

I put sand in EVERY tube except the crossmember main tubes.

I don't have an opinion yet.
It was a "twiddling" move on my part.


I think that if you have your crashes and ride and all on the same rig, this idea might reduce the flapping some, if you don't like the movement.

How do you block off the ends of the tumes so that when you put up / take down, you dont get sand everywhere?!

I'm looking at the 'polystyrene balls' method, just trying to work out the best way to keep them damn things in when I'm putting up / taking down the stand.

Use rubber caps on the endings.
Have some kids with play toys around there as well in case the sand will ...
Simple foam can to the job as well.
Or sillicon kit...

Wow, I din't think of that 'cause my set is static in my studio.

You might use that foam product in the last inch of the tube, and then epoxy the cap onto the tube.

Duct tape would be quite ugly ...

My bud used bb-size aluminum shot in his tubes and stuffed packing paper in the last few inches, but my sand is heavier.

It was funny. The only size the store had was a 50lb. bag, and that's not a very big bag of sand.

I think if you put it in the tubes, then put silicone foam or caulk in the last inch, then cap it and let 'em set together, it'll be sealed.

Why do you want your stand to be so heavy?
Sand is about the last thing I would ever put in rack tubing. Because of its weight and messy clean up.

I don't move my stand to gigs or anything, and there's not a grain out of control.

I wanted the weight to minimize transfer of vibration and jiggling of the pads.

It's helped, but nothing that I'd defend to the finish as a bigtime, necessary modification.
