  • VH-10 hihat starts triggering head instead of rim when increasing hitrate

Bought td-17kvx a week ago. Had previously TD-9 so have experience with v-drums.

When hitting the edge of the vh-10 softly it is possible to trigger rim, but the faster you strike, the harder you must strike to avoid triggering the head.
Have calibrated many times and tried all relevant settings.
The TD-9 tended to be the same.
The store confirms the same trend, is it really normal, or can one do something about it.

First you should understand the way the VH-10 works.

Cymbals are Piezo-Switch Pads, with a Piezo on the Head/Bow and a Switch consisting of two sheet contacts on the Rim/Edge, shown in the picture as the Edge Sensor, which close and make a short circuit when the edge is struck.

If the Module detects the Piezo signal on its own (Switch open), the module interprets this as a Bow hit and plays the Bow sound.
If the Module detects the Piezo signal and at the same time the Edge Switch is closed, the module interprets this as an Edge hit and plays the Edge sound.

If you don't hit the Edge hard enough to close the Switch, then only the Piezo will be detected, and the module interprets this as a Bow hit and plays the Bow sound.

There is not a range of detection, as there is with the Piezo or with the Hi-Hat Pedal, but the Switch is either open or closed at the instance when the Piezo signal is detected. Therefore, I don't think there is any settings you can change to increase sensitivity.

If you are not actually using the Bow Sound in your playing, you can set the Bow to also play a Hi-Hat Edge sound instead of the Bow sound. See Page 27 of the TD-17 DataList.
