  • Bonham Snare

I don't know if technical is the right place to post this but I'll give it a try. Has anybody successfully re-created (or come close to re-creating) the classic Bonham snare sound on their TD-30 module? And if so, would you be willing to share the settings with me? I have been a Bonham fan for 45 years and have a kit sound that sounds so so close with the exception of the snare...

You might like to check out Top 50 Drummers from VExpressions

It has a nice John Bonham Kit.

Ok, will do. Where did that message from Alan VEX go to -- ".../samples/new_bonham.mp3"? That was a GOOD snare sound!

I cannot find it in one of our packs. I believe it's the 20 kit with a lot of ambiance added, but I cannot be sure. I'm trying to find the kit. When/If I do, I'll let you know.

Is this the sample you are talking about: http://www.vexpressionsltd.com/samples/new_bonham.mp3

If so, my educated guess is that this is kit #45 from the VEX Professor's Pack which is one of the Bonus Kits modeled to sound like John Bonham.
Here is a link to the Professors Pack: http://www.vexpressionsltd.com/p_pack.html
Here is a link to the owners manual where you can see the description for kit #45: http://www.vexpressionsltd.com/manua..._readme_07.pdf

Just did some googling and now this is more than just an educated guess -- I found a thread here that confirms it:

BINGO! I could not find that thing for the life of me! Would have helped if I had looked at that pack.

                  Thanks Ken!

Yes, that is a GREAT snare sound. I have five expansion packs: top 50 drummers, 80s and 90s giggin kits, master picks 2, studio kits and engineer 1. I know there's at least one bonham kit in these packs because it's installed on my TD-30 (the expansion packs were included with my used TD-30). The snare sound isn't quite as good as the one linked here, though

Correct. The one on the Professor's pack was done separately at a later time. (completely different kit) Thus, the word "new" in the sample name.

OK, I'm going to buy a professor's pack

Yeah, not an obvious pack to look at. Luckily this is one of the kits that I have in my current TD-30 config and I used the exact same kit name that was used in the original pack. I didn't remember what pack it came from, so searched all of the expansion packs that I have for a kit with the same name. I have to admit that I was surprised to find it in the professor pack.

In real life, Bonham supposedly played rim shots on his snare to get that sound. Yeah?
Immensely powerful yet with a liquid cat-quick elegance
