  • Mimic Pro - A/B repeat of backing track?

My Mimic is out for delivery, so I'll be playing it tonight (maybe). Reading the manual, it looks like there is no A/B repeat for backing tracks. I use this on a daily basis in my TD-30 while learning critical parts of tunes that I need to perform...and, I have a performance coming up soon that I'm still working on. I don't think I can live without this feature (so, I may delay setting up the Mimic until after this performance.)

However, it looks like there is an A/B repeat for recordings though, so, could I "record" the backing track and then use the A/B repeat there? That certainly won't be easy when I'm moving between multiple songs and would need to "record" them again each time? Or can I load songs back into the recorder to use the A/B repeat?

If that isn't workable, does anyone know of any Android Mp3 players with A/B repeat? I could probably figure out a way to route a phone/table into the Mimic's aux-in and use the external player.

    Thanks!

    -Kevin

A quick search of the play store turned up a few mp3 players with A/B repeat, so I'll probably end up using that...somewhat less convenient than I'm used to, but I think it will be workable.

If the songs you’re talking about are well known, there is a good chance the game phase shift has the song charted. Just mentioning it as it helps me learn songs. There is a practice option with a/b looping etc etc.

      give it a look
      TD-25 + TD-6v running - 2 x PD-100s updated with dual Piezo, 3 x PD-120, VH-11, Alesis 16" 3 zone Strike Ride, Alesis 14" Strike crash, 1 x CY-15r, 2 x CY-13r as crash, 1 x Cy-12. iconnectmidi2+ and 2 x iconnect mio for midi triggering.

This is somewhat off topic for this question, but since it's my topic, I guess I'm willing to go there... I'm using a VH-13, and I own the rockband midi converter...I was never able to get it to do proper open close of the hats, so I gave up on using my kit with games... I presume nothing has changed and the MIMIC Pro would have the same issue? Or is MIDI out of the Pro, directly into the PC going to give me better results?

there is a game mode that does sort of work with the CC hats, real drums mode is this mode. there isn't a large list of songs charted with this though. youtube does have some of these songs linked but the massive repository of songs you can find with a quick google search (fof forums) are predominately at best expert+ mode (to be specific, they're literal rips of harmonix charts).

However, I've found a workable way to configure this to get about 90% functionality.

In phase shift you will need to setup a midi profile, this is your midi map. in that I map midi notes 22/42 (closed bow/edge), and 26 (open edge) to 'yellow' and 46 (open bow) to blue. doing it this way still allows me to open/close the hats for different sounds and still trigger the 'yellow' thing for the game as long as i stay on the edge.

obviously isn't perfect, but, i don't care about 100% perfect. I mainly want to learn all the notes to a song. once i have the notes down then i worry about matching the dynamics to what is actually on the track.

this method has proved very functional for me. again, not perfect, but very functional.

Thanks for the tips. I'll have to look into it (and figure out a way to get a computer monitor in front of me...)

            But, back to the topic.

A/B repeat of MP3s on the Mimic?

I guess it doesn't matter as long as it supports big USB drives...but, wow. I thought Yamaha was nuts for doing this (only supporting WAV, not MP3) on my Diskalvier, and that was over 10 years ago.

Anyway, I guess I need to rephrase the question...Can the Mimic do what I want (A/B repeat) in the "recording" section? I guess I'll have to try it tonight.

likely a latency thing? takes more CPU cycles to play that compressed sound? idk just spit ballin.

There is looping for the recorder, but not the player. (not that I know of, without simply using the player controls to rewind) However, it is theoretically possible to simply record your song into the player to loop a particular section. I'm not sure you can set loop "points", so you'd just record the section you want to practice. However, you can also move the start playing point. So, you can record the entire song, and just scroll to a start point at the portion you want to practice. Each time you stop/start, it will return to this point, until you manually scroll back to the beginning. (or another point)

                            Thanks Alan,

That seems like more trouble that it's worth. I'm going down the "external device into AUX in" path for now. I've got an unused phone lying around that should work fine, as long as I can find the right player/interface.

But, if the recorder allowed you to simply "load" a previous recording, I think it would be somewhat workable. Having to re-record it each time would be nuts for my use case.

You quoted while I was editing. You may want to read my post again. (just a slight edit for clarification) It's not as much work as it sounds.
