  • TDW1 Upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading my TD10 with the TDW1. Is it true that when I do I will be able to control the toms and cumbals separatley with the on-board volume controls? Hos is it done, does the backing or click slide function get replaced? Also, I understand all currect patches (custom and factory) are replaced. Is the memory upgrade necessary only to save any kit settings or is it recommeded to do anywoay with the TDW1 upgrade? How much is the RAM upgrade? Sorry for all the questions -- thanks in advance for your help.

Is it true that when I do [upgrade] I will be able to control the toms and cymbals separatley with the on-board volume controls?
    yes

How is it done, does the backing or click slide function get replaced?
Backing and click are still there. There is a dual combination of buttons which convert the sliders to separate controls for kick, snare, hat, toms, cymbals and ride. Press them again and it reverts to the original set up. Switch to the old settings to set the click and backing. Switch to the new functions and the click and backing levels are retained. It's a nice feature.

Also, I understand all current patches (custom and factory) are replaced. Is the memory upgrade necessary only to save any kit settings or is it recommeded to do anyway with the TDW1 upgrade?
Original TD-10 kits and new TDW-1 kits are available in ROM. There are only 50 "user" kits available (as before). The upgrade loads the 50 TDW-1 kits to the user area. Any customized kits are lost. You need to save them (use PC/sysex software, sequencer or memory card). You can always overwrite the TDW-1 kits with those in ROM. Customized kits not saved before the upgrade are toast. 50 user kits are plenty for normal people. This board will not tolerate whining about not having 100 user kits.

How much is the RAM upgrade?
Somewhere between $240-$270 new. Shop around. You might do better. I don't know that RAM is the correct technical term, but we know what you mean.

    Quit waiting. Buy it. Now.

Listen to Boingo. Get the upgrade.

IMO, getting a memory card (around $100) is a waste of time and money - the new sounds of the TDW-1 blow away the old sounds - you won't feel much need to save your old kits once you have the new sounds.

Also, perhaps the biggest advantage of the upgrade is the substantial increase in sensitivity and dynamics - playing will be more expressive.

Go for it. You will be happy.

Thanks to you both for the info. Of the new kits, are there new (better) cymbal sounds? I am not really happy with the samples in the original TD10. Also, you mentioned increased sensitivity, does that carry over to the PD9 cympal pads or just the V's?

Better toms, better snares, more kicks, better cybals, better sensitivity controls, better volume slider arrangement (in addition to the one you already have), and some cool stickers to put on it <g>.

You still have access to the old kits (factory ones, your own tweaks you need to backup to a card or PC (I'd go with PC using the vkit trans program available on this site)).

Aside from having to buy the card, there is not a downside to this upgrade, and it is pretty good bang/buck in my opinion.

Yes there are closed High hat sounds, make sure any update you get has the v-cymbal sticker on the box. That is the latest version.

Could I load just one kit that I backed up on the PC to the TD10, or would I need to get the memory card for that?

I think the memory card is the most convenient and reliable method, but you could use a PC, midi cable and VkitTrans software (free on this site) to transfer single kits. There is other software which will do the same thing. If you don't have midi inputs on your sound card, you can get the type that utilize the game port.

If you have a sequencer, you could use that too.

Without the TDW-1 you can only transfer all the kits at once to the PC. With the TDW-1 you have the possibility to transfer one kit at the time.
When I did the upgrade tot the TDW-1,I did it as follows:
                            - Before installing the TDW-1, transfer all the kits to you PC.
                            - Install the TDW-1
                            - Load the kits-backup from the PC to the TD-10
                            - Transfer only the kits that you need from the TD-10 to your PC. (itís a new option of the TDW-1)
                            - Reset the factory settings of the TD-10
                            - Load the single kits one by one from your PC to the kit numbers on the TD-10 that you don't need.

                            Success!

                            Groeten, Peter
