  • DIY metal cymbal choke with NO strip!

I'm running a TD6 for my drums and a Trigger IO for my cymbals. I wired the tip to the metal cymbal and with the Trigger IO I get a choke using Superior Drummer.
Today I plugged one of the cymbals into my snare input on the TD6 which is piezo/piezo and the choke works with that also. So I'm guessing this setup would work on all piezo/piezo inputs on Roland modules and no choke strip is necessary!

    hmmm...but there's still no second zone though(as in bow/edge) because it's only got one piezo....it's just either/or.....correct??

The metal strip usually acts as the edge switch(second zone)...and choke switch.

Yea, it would only be a single zone with choke but it works for me, Superior Drummer only has crash and mute articulations anyways. My ride is 2 zone with no choke.

Actually I think there are expansion packs for Superior that do have bell and bow articulations and mute for crashes but Metal Foundry doesn't and that's what I mostly use. I hope this setup works with the DITI!

I just came across this, somebody please explain what's going on here? all I got was that he wired the Tip to the metal cymbal. Assuming he means he wired the tip to the Hot on the piezo, how is he getting choke from a single piezo?

I've been experimenting with this as well. At first it seemed to work but it turned out to be unreliable.

What basically happens is that your body is used as a conductor/electron storage. If you then touch the conductive cymbal there will either flow a small current from your body into the cymbal, or your body will function as a grounding for the voltage level on the cymbal. Either way the voltage on the input connected to the cymbal will change. If this voltage change is above the threshold for that input, the module will detect it, and you can use it to trigger something (in this case the choke function). As far as I know, you can configure SD to choke on a trigger, instead of a switch to ground.

Al this is highly influenced by environmental circumstances ( air humidity, electrical noise, the type of shoes you wear, etc.) I found it highly unreliable. sometimes it works perfectly, other times it works not at all.

Nice setup!-I am really interested in this idea because it has great cymbals instead of rubber. What type of trigger and how did you wire the tip to the cymbal, also how is it for sound with the band around the edge of cymbal, does it bring down the volume for quiet playing, thanks,Ken
