  • 2Box Gear Compatibility and Mods Links and Builds

Been some discussion of a thread like this. IMHO I believe it will be useful to put our links and info on modifications of other manufacturers gear compatibility for the 2Box gear since it has seemed to stand the test of time since introduction and become a popular alternative to the other gear on the market. However since most of us cannot afford to completely switch brands to utilize the 2Box stuff...it would be nice to know if there is any way use our existing gear. Having a resource here along with the obvious info and links to the 2box forum may make it easier for newcomers to access such infomin the future.

This should NOT be used as a BASHING PLATFORM for any brand.........Just the merits of mods and compatibility.

    Thanks.

Here is a link to a discussion that was closed because of bashing...

Lets not go there again. There were some reasonable discussions within it if you would like to sift through the flaming.

Yamaha PCY-135/155 Mod for use with DrumItFive

SHwoKing posted this in another thread and I found it very helpful and interesting.

The Yammies will work as a Ride with Bell / Bow. If you sacrifice the choke and edge, you'll even have a strong Bow/Bell separation. the mods seems very easy as Rob stated.

          Rob's 2Box DIY Conversion...

Starting at post #327 Rob aka rasoo has built a spectacular kit...shells...ride and hihat......you should check it out. The walkthrough of the build is very informative.

          http://www.vdrums.com/forum/showthre...kit-DIY/page13

There are some other members that have built kits and posted bits about the sample modifications for kits in the module...I'll post links here when I find them.

          Enjoy.

            JmanWord's Stealth A2E kit

Jerry has built many great kits over the years and offers cymbal and HH conversion kits that work with the2Box gear on his site.

http://stealthdrums.com/ (you may want to PM or email him at his site to get updated 2Box info.)

This is his latest build and the thread has lots of info including a 2Box link and some videos of the samples he's been building for the module.

            http://www.vdrums.com/forum/showthre...-modules/page6

            Enjoy.

Manfred's circuit board to use other brand cymbal as HH

About Jman's conversion kit, only the cymbals kit is specifically design for 2Box. For the HH, it is a classic bow/edge trigger. You'll need a circuit board provided by Manfred on the 2Box forum (assuming he is still have some / is able to built some again). This way, you can use any bow/edge cymbal as a HH.
More info about the circuit board here.

                SD-Card Mod

The 2Box module has a 4GB SD card installed inside.
Building Dsnd. (2box file format for importing sound) from SD2 or other VST crunch lots of memory space. IE, a Hi hat can take 650 mb. So the 4GB has its limit. Not to mention that you have to upload Dsnd. with the USB port which is slow (USB 1.1). So there's a mod that can be done by adding a SD to SD extender inside and out of the module so that it is possible to acces the SD card easily and transfer directly from it without using the module USB port.
More info on how to do this mod here.

[EDIT]Also, note that an extender is mandatory if you want to use a bigger SD-Card. The reason is that the 2Box will work as a USB storage only if the SD-Card is 4GB. So putting a bigger SD-Card inside the module will render the USB port useless and you surely don't want to open your module everytime you want to add/remove something on the SD-Card[/EDIT]

                  SD-Card compatibility

Assuming you want to do the SD-Card mod, it is crucial to know that the SD card model used as data storage is also very important, you'll need an SD card with optimum data transfer or you will encounter sound problem while using big Dsnd built from VST.
                  Again, more info here.

2box is definitely going the be the brains of my next build simply because of the plug-and-play feature along with the SD card storage. Sadly, it wont be for at least another year. /poorcollegestudent

That's definitely a good choice really. The best IMO but this is just that I'm not into sound modeling and editing so the 2Box is for me the best choice to do.

I have edited my post about the SD-Card mod, i forgot to mention that swapping the 4GB for a bigger one render the USB port useless. So a bigger card means SD-Card extender mod at the same time.

Great info there you guys are doing a great job, thanks !

Here is another question maybe one of the most important: Inputs !
Say i DO want a cross stick on the snare ( not on another pad) and i also don't care about the rim sounds of the toms, what are the max pads i can use ? Notice i am using the word pads and not inputs knowing that i can use a Y cable to split one input .
Also i am not sure if it affects the inputs but i want a 2 zone ride ( with a 2box cymbal) to use bell and bow, and at least one cymbal ( 2 box as well for 3 zones, bell , edge , bow)

Jerome it would really be nice to see your diamond drums with the 2box in action. That's the first thing i am gonna do when i get mine !

''Lernean Hydra'' ( a bounche of roland pads with a td-6 module)
''Lucy'' (Diamond electronic drums with a td-12 module)

                          ''Cherry Gretschy Lady'' (Gretsch Catalina Ash 6 piece A to E kit-Roland td20 module-A to E cymbals)

                          " Mrs.Catalina'' (Gretsch Catalina maple 6 piece kit-Paiste signature+Masterwork custom made cymbals)

                            2Box inputs and splitting options.

The 2Box has 10 inputs and 15 channels in total.
The inputs are as follow :
                            - Hi Hat
                            - Cymbal 1,2,3
                            - Kick
                            - Snare
                            - Tom 1,2,3,4

Only the Snare input and the 4 toms inputs can be split with an Y cable.
So there is 5 inputs that can't be split (Kick, Hi Hat, Cymbal 1,2,3) and 5 inputs that can be split (Snare, Tom 1,2,3,4). So you have your 15 channels mention at the beginning. you can then plug 15 pads with 2 box, 5 TRS and 10 TS. And of course 2 TS can be swap to 1 TRS.

                            Hope it clears things up.

As for my drums in action, i don't have a camera (I know, old trick, stole it from Daniel ) but I have picked pictures today that I will post in few hours. I'll need a PA too. But I think I might figured it out : my drum teacher is eager to test drive my kit and he will bring a PA at the same time so both of us can hear the other one play. I'll try to get a camera at the same time.

yeah inputs is a big drawback for big kits , but at the module cost... u can always just get 2!!
