Converted acousti-electro drum set sensitivity

well, I was intrested in buying a Yamaha DTXpress IV special kit, yet I've considered simply taking a Cheap drumset, putting DDrum triggers on it, and taking cymbals and module off the DTXpress IV set, and putting mesh drumheads on the drums, Thus making a simply converted drumset, and I was wondering why bother getting an electronic kit if I can make such a converted set that feels very realistic, until I've been told that The triggered meshed drums doesn't react as good as an electronic set, the sensitivity isn't as good, and thus playing things more softly like ghost notes on the snare isn't working well, altough I'm a metal drummer mostly, and you also get alot of double triggering and such...and that I'd better get an electronic kit instead, anyone has views or have experienced this matter? thanks very much in advance. =)

Welcome to Vdrums. With that said, there are plenty of people who have convert a cheap drum set just like you stated, and many of them are very happy with it. If you do decide to go this route keep in mind that you may have to make adjustments within your yamaha modules settings to get it to work like you want it. I would use the search and search for ddrum triggers or A to E conversion.

I have done what you suggest - check gear link in my signature. Works very well, though there is inevitably a bit of tweaking settings to get it to fire well. It triggers very well, so much so that my Roland mesh pads feel a little weird now I also trigger an acoustic kit live and the two compliment each other and help to ease the transition between edrums and acoustic drums. Go for it

well tweaking with the module is not what bothering me, that's natural. what bothers me is that after all I'll spend alot of money on all that equipment and at the end it won't work as well as an electronic kit. btw, does it matter what brand of mesh heads I use?
my plan right now is a cheap set, whatever mesh heads I find, 5 piece ddrum pro triggers, A roland module (might be the td-20, if not i'll find whatever) or a Yamaha module. Roland or yamaha cymbals. should it work well?
what kind of tweaking is required at the module?
is the snare really that realisticly sensitive?
having all the snare ghost notes and such?
is it possible to make the set completly silent with the mesh heads? just like the roland e-kits?
I've just seen many people have trouble with those triggered mesh heads, double triggering and bad sensitivity...I wonder what's a better route overall, just getting and electronic or converting an acoustic, my goal is basiclly making it as closer to acoustic as possible, but still having some of the electronic advantages like the built in metronome, or the triggering for no sensitivity for the bass, and being completly silent which is very important. thanks alot in advance for all the answers. =)

I did convert my accoustic drum to electronic but with Pearl Mesh head and Roland RT-10 triggers. I cannot comment for Yamaha module but with my TD-9, everything is perfect. The sensitivity is good and I cannot ask for better stuff right now. When I had a TD-6V module, I had all sort of problems with sensitivity and double trigerring. When I bought the TD-9, and just did choose RT-10 trigger in the configuration and those problems disappeared.

I trigger a 4 pc Mapex M pro with TD-9, RT10's and Roland mesh heads. The heads are slightly louder on full size shells and the triggers track dynamic range real well with the TD-9 basic settings. Someone else might be able to address stage vibration questions.

Beautiful kit! What brand of mesh head are you using on your bass drum since I don't think Roland offers anything larger than 12" today? Are there any issues with the feel, double-triggering, or wear with such a large mesh head?

Mine is an 18" (no name) from Ed at Drumbalaya with an Evans patch to control wear. It triggers great with RT10K and the feel is much closer to mylar than the small bouncy Roland Kd's. 18's are hard to find. Hart and Pearl make 20's and 22's. Or check the DIY's for homemade screen versions.
