  • Roland 3 zone cymbals

    Can anyone confirm which of the following very professionnal drawings I made, illustrates the Roland 3 zone cymbal style?
    Or is none of my super esthetic masterpiece right?

    Not sure weither it requires one or two piezos!!

    Oh and one detail I should explain... All three drawings show a cymbal wired to the Sleeve(s) of the Jack(s), that's because I wish to use my acoustic cymbal as half of the switch.

    The bell is a switch rather than a piezo. That and the bow piezo are connected to one jack. The edge switch and the bow piezo are connected to the other. In both cases, the piezo is connected to the tip+sleve, the switch is connected to ring+sleve.

      I dont know if Roland 3-zone cymbals can be very different from one another depending on which model we are talking about... But for some reason, after posting this picture, he then stated that Roland-style cymbals like CY-15R, required only one piezo (located close to the bell) and one edge switch, both linked to 2 jacks. Which means that the exact same signal would be sent to both jacks and that it's all up to the module to make the distinction between the different zones (which is definitely possible, but unnecessary if each jack receives a different switch).

      But anyway, thanks a lot for the clarification!

        The CY-12 and the CY-15 do indeed have the same internals.

        That doesnt make much sense to me as surely it'd just play both the edge and bell at the same time? Unless he was talking about the choke switch, rather than the edge trigger as that will have to be connected to both?

          i took apart these cymbals they use one piezos and from what i remember two or three membrane switches. one was the bell and one was the edge which itself has two parts one on the top and one on the bottom the cymbal chokes when you squeeze the two.

          but from what i remember it still had two trs inputs i plan to replicate this but it will be hard.i might not make a membrane switch for the bell i'll just use a piezo.i remember not liking how the bell triggered.

          that's typically used for choke.
          but i plan to make one for edge and choke with vinyl instead of mouse pad foam (like the wrap on some acoustic kits) and with some conductive and non conductive ink.
          and finally some ink foam(to separate the layers) for a snug tight slim fit that wont break and will look good

            now i remember it had three membrane's i think but they were connected to a little PCB
            that's what has held me back from making a 3 zone + choke cymbal can't figure out how to get around that pcb im sure using two piezos ought to do it .
            in other words it will be a 4 zone set up i piezo for bell 1 for bow
            i membrane switch for edge which i hope will send an on/ off signal to the module then a choke membrane switch.
            go to a shop look at the cymbal's those roland cymbals clearly have an illustration on the underside indicating how to strike them to get different results because of that pcb board (wich everything plugged into)
            all the membranes and i think piezo too.
            and the membranes would override the piezo. maybe even use it as reference to how hard/loud you hit it

              I found a way to get a 3 zone + choke cymbal and use only one piezo. But I had to give up the Roland-style.
              It's gonna be a simplified replica of a Yamaha pcy150s cymbal. No circuit required, but just one little resistor soldered to one of the wires.

              I'm lucky enough to have a drum module that supports that setting, so I'll give that a try!
